Background / History
Killer Rats originated from rats mutated by the capital region’s enormous quantities of chemical waste and intense radiation. These mutations increased their strength, aggression, durability, and intelligence in certain individuals. Their willingness to mobilize entire colonies against intruders made them a principal reason scavengers called the capital the “Land of No Return” 15.
Their ruler is not one of the enormous red-furred rats, but a palm-sized white laboratory mouse later named Zhi Zhi. She survived in the abandoned Gene Research Institute by consuming Gene-Completion Agent, developed silicon-based characteristics, and gained the ability to control the Killer Rat population through signals emitted by crystals on her brain 44 45.
Appearance
- Eyes: Ordinary and red-furred rats have bright scarlet eyes, visible as countless red points within dark garbage heaps 15 16 41.
- Build: Ordinary rats have heavily muscled bodies; larger specimens resemble calves or rhinoceroses in size 15 16 17.
- Teeth: Gray-furred rats have oversized teeth that pierce their lower jaws and drip foul-smelling fluid 15.
- Odor: Attacking rats carry a strong, foul stench associated with blood 16 41.
Documented Variants
| Variant | Distinguishing features | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Gray-furred Killer Rat | Generally at least one meter long; one attacker measures 1.5 meters 15 16. | Ordinary colony members that ambush intruders and attack in overwhelming numbers 16. |
| White-furred strategist | Much smaller than ordinary rats; displays greater intelligence and nearly humanlike expressions 16. | Directs gray-furred rats using low-frequency sound 16. |
| Red-furred / Red-Haired Killer Rat | Over four meters long, with stiff red fur and a rhinoceros-sized body 17 41. | Elite attackers; older, enormous specimens may contain amorphous alloy in their stomachs 17 41. |
Behavior
Killer Rats are fiercely territorial. They hide inside garbage heaps, wait for intruders to land, and exploit openings to attack the throat or head. Territorial aggression can overcome their fear even after an opponent has previously intimidated them 15 16 40.
They nevertheless possess strong survival instincts. Killing their strategists or demonstrating overwhelming destructive power can make ordinary rats freeze, tremble, or retreat. When Cheng Qi threatened them with his muon catalyst, the strategists organized an evacuation rather than continuing the attack 16 20.
Their defense of Zhi Zhi is particularly intense. As Cheng Qi approached the buried Gene Research Institute, they became increasingly frantic, inadvertently revealing the location they were protecting 42 44.
Abilities & Skills
Strength and Resilience
Mutations give Killer Rats exceptionally hard teeth and claws, powerful bodies, and the ability to remain dangerous after catastrophic injuries 15.
- Ordinary rats can continue attacking after being cut in half 15.
- A red-furred rat bisected by the Muon Research Center’s closing door still propelled its upper body toward Cheng Qi 17.
- Red-furred rats can leap several meters and tear apart metal garbage with their forepaws 17 42.
- Their fangs cannot penetrate the Extreme Warrior Armor: an ordinary attacker’s teeth snapped on contact 16.
Swarm Coordination
White-furred strategists command other rats through low-frequency sound waves inaudible to humans. Zhi Zhi exercises control over the entire population through special signals from her brain crystals 16 44.
- Encirclement: Strategists arrange rats in concentric rings for successive waves of attacks 16.
- Rat Tide: Vast numbers climb and trample over one another, creating moving waves more than a hundred meters high 16.
- Pursuit: Swarms pour into deep holes without regard for individual casualties and dig through buried material to reach targets 16 43 44.
- Cooperative escape: Rats form a living ladder to evacuate from underground 20.
Digestion and Alloy Formation
Killer Rats are omnivores with powerful chewing and digestive capabilities. Their mutated stomach acid has special molecular corrosiveness, allowing them to consume garbage containing various alloys 41.
- Indigestible metallic elements accumulate over years and fuse into impure amorphous alloy 41.
- The Standard Template Construct identifies a recovered piece as 70% pure 41.
- Cheng Qi concludes that the lengthy accumulation process makes enormous red-furred rats the likely producers 41.
- Zhi Zhi can arrange for the rats to vomit these foreign objects, allowing collection without killing them 45.
Limitations
- Killer Rats cannot fly, leaving them unable to reach Cheng Qi while he hovers above their territory 42.
- Red-furred rats process visual information more slowly than humans and cannot reliably track Cheng Qi moving at 28 meters per second 41.
- Extreme danger can override their bloodlust; the spatial resonance produced by Cheng Qi’s muon catalyst forces a mass retreat 20.
Relationships
- Zhi Zhi — Rat King and ruler. The colony protects her underground refuge and obeys the signals emitted by her brain crystals 44 45.
- Cheng Qi — Initially a territorial intruder and enemy. After befriending Zhi Zhi, he receives the submission of hundreds of red-furred rats and access to her subjects’ service 16 45.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Arc | Events |
|---|---|
| First Kyoto expedition | The colony detects Cheng Qi and Foolish Boy, attacks their excavation site, and escalates to a Rat Tide. Elite red-furred rats pursue them to the Muon Research Center, where the alloy door blocks the swarm 15 16 17. |
| Escape from the research center | Rats remain massed outside the entrance. Cheng Qi activates his First-Generation Muon Catalyst at 10%, then 30%, frightening them into an organized retreat 20. |
| Speed test and alloy discovery | Cheng Qi kills at least fifty red-furred rats during a three-minute, twenty-eight-second speed test. Eight corpses contain amorphous alloy, prompting him to consider the colony a valuable material source 40 41. |
| Search for the Gene Research Institute | Cheng Qi follows changes in the swarm’s agitation to locate the buried facility. Zhi Zhi identifies him as an intruder and orders the rats to dig down and kill him 42 43 44. |
| Submission and collection | After Zhi Zhi befriends Cheng Qi, the attacking elites bow to him. She has her subjects regurgitate their alloy deposits; roughly one in eight enormous red-furred rats contains alloy. Two third-generation Iron Moms collect and clean more than fifty thousand pieces 45 46. |
