Background / History

Roman has traveled through different worlds countless times. Despite being unable to read when he first accompanies Lu Mi, he recognizes modern smartphones and knows how to operate their cameras 24 26.

His origin and the reason he conceals his face are initially undisclosed. He avoids answering whether he is an NPC, refuses to explain his past, and later leaves Lu Mi’s direct question about his face covering unanswered 8 32 46. These mysteries are eventually connected to his death, an unsuccessful attempt to become a guardian deity, and a curse imposed by the Spring Water Fairy 118 162 165.

Roman grew up in a village and does not remember ever seeing his mother; nobody told him where she went. His father was an alcoholic who was beaten to death after being caught spying on another man’s wife bathing when Roman was ten 128 134.

While attempting to save his village, Roman attracted the Spring Water Fairy, who wanted him to live with her in the water and escape his destined calamity. He refused because he wanted to fulfill his responsibility to the village. The rejected fairy cursed him: anyone seeing his face would cause his soul to scatter soon afterward, and any attempt to confess his romantic feelings in any form would cause immense pain. Roman covered himself and continued working to fulfill his agreement, but the plague-stricken villagers interpreted his behavior as evidence that he worshipped an evil god and had brought disaster upon them 162.

Roman was ultimately burned to death by his family and neighbors, the very people he had tried to protect. He recalls never having been loved and regards himself as an ill omen. After his separation from Lu Mi at Wonderful Dream, he returns to desolate ruins that he considers the place where he belongs 118 165.

After leaving “Mom’s Anniversary,” Roman promises to remain with Lu Mi until Lu Mi leaves the game permanently. His interference with the instance and subsequent disruption of the control center lead deputy administrator 2044 to sentence him to at least two instances as a player with his divine power sealed. Roman welcomes the punishment and asks whether he can continue playing afterward 22 23. His divine power returns after Magic Manor and Bo’ai Academy, and he is later explicitly identified as a non-player without a Wristband 66 119 130.

Appearance

  • Build and hair: Tall, with black curls. Zhang Zhizhang regards him as a young man who appears to be under twenty, though his actual age is not established 36 38.
  • Eyes: Described as red in the Public Rest Area and pitch-black during Magic Manor. Lu Mi repeatedly finds his eyes and partially concealed features strikingly beautiful 25 32 36.
  • Clothing: Usually wears a hooded cloak, black mask, gloves, and extensive covering. He keeps his gloves on while sleeping and his mask on after bathing 21 24 29 45.
  • Temporary growths: During Magic Manor, human fingernails grow densely across his right palm, arm, and back. He secretly removes some before Lu Mi discovers the extent of the condition 39 41.
  • Unmasked features: Has sharply defined features, a high nose bridge, long eyelashes, and red lips. Lu Mi first explores his face by touch while blindfolded, then finally sees it directly during their farewell 158 165 166.
  • Scarring and injuries: During Companion Grave, his body bears overlapping wounds, especially on his abdomen, back, and thighs. Subsequent treatment reduces the visible marks without immediately resolving his internal injuries 119 122.

Personality

Roman is playful, clingy, and openly eager for Lu Mi’s attention. He puts a cat-ear headband on Lu Mi, repeatedly seeks permission to share his bed, and delights in cuddling his tabby form. The threat of losing access to cat cuddles immediately makes him stop making noise 7 9 24 25.

His affection is strongly possessive. He becomes jealous when Jin Bi pinches Lu Mi’s cheek, considers killing her, and restrains himself because Lu Mi calls her a friend. He repeatedly asks whether other people are Lu Mi’s friends before deciding how to treat them 26 27 36 42.

Toward Lu Mi, Roman can be attentive and accommodating even when disappointed. He comforts him during frightening encounters, supports him through a painful memory episode, and offers to sleep on the floor rather than disturb him. After insulting Ning Zhuangzhuang, he gives a sincere apology and reveals that he preserved her as an NPC because Lu Mi was so upset 10 25 31 45 46.

Roman also uses his apparent vulnerability to obtain closeness. He claims to fear being alone and later persuades Lu Mi to stay in his room by arguing that supervision is the only way to keep him from attacking Jin Bi 25 45.

His possessiveness becomes openly coercive at Wonderful Dream after he overhears Cheng Cheng’s claims about his past relationship with Lu Mi. Roman restrains Lu Mi, suppresses his elemental power, and threatens the consequences of having their encounter interrupted. This destroys Lu Mi’s earlier impression of him as harmless and innocent 65 66 81. Roman later regrets failing to conceal his near-mad possessiveness and eventually apologizes for his conduct, acknowledging that jealousy drove his behavior 118 158.

Roman is deeply afraid of abandonment. After returning injured, he resolves to become more patient and careful about concealing his impulses. Although he dislikes cooking, he prepares meals for Lu Mi and explains that someone told him useful people would not be discarded 122 125 126. His attentiveness extends to buying Lu Mi meals, doing his cafeteria work, cleaning their shared bathroom, making their bed, and comforting him through nightmares 53 147.

He is capable of self-sacrifice, but frames his final decision in personal rather than abstract moral terms. He tells Lu Mi that losing him would be like dying and ultimately declares that he is dying for love, not for noble virtue or countless lives 166.

Abilities & Skills

Divine Power and Black Smoke

Roman possesses divine power that 2044 describes as sufficient to overwhelm players and NPCs 23.

  • Before the seal, he uses black smoke to lift guards and staff into the air repeatedly while continuing to operate the control-center console 23.
  • The administration edits the “Mom’s Anniversary” broadcast to conceal his role in making “Mother” relinquish control of the players 23.
  • His punishment seals his divine power for at least two instances. According to 2044, death under those conditions would be permanent 23.
  • The seal remains active when he fights the burned ghost at Bo’ai Academy 50.
  • His divine power returns after leaving Bo’ai Academy. At Wonderful Dream, he suppresses Lu Mi’s elemental abilities so completely that Lu Mi cannot summon a spark 66.
  • Black mist accompanies his rescue of Lu Mi from Zheng Sinian, whose arm is severed by an unseen force 80.
  • During his final farewell, he summons black mist to shield his kiss with Lu Mi from the surrounding crowd 166.

Strength, Speed, and Endurance

Even with his divine power sealed, Roman retains physical capabilities beyond those of an ordinary human 42 47.

  • Carries He Shengguang around the manor hall while keeping ahead of Michel, then adds Mo Yu to his load without being caught 42.
  • Moves quickly enough to reach Mo Yu before Michel can attack her 42.
  • Hoists Cheng Cheng onto his shoulder and carries him to another cafeteria table 44.
  • Lifts Han San by the collar after the acid attack 47.
  • Holds the academy gatekeeper in his chair with a hand on his shoulder while demanding answers 51.
  • Decapitates the false Lu Mi during Xie Ping’an’s recognition test with a clean, decisive movement 56.
  • After his power returns, survives Zheng Sinian repeatedly biting flesh from his body and throws the attacker off when Lu Mi calls to him 82.
  • States that the hostile little girl in The Person in the Mirror could not hurt him 155.
  • Limit: His body can still be injured. Sulfuric acid burns his arm, and the academy’s burned ghost tears away a chunk of flesh 47 48 50. His later severe injuries respond poorly to ordinary Mall medicines, and even the Healing Area does not immediately heal all his internal damage 119 122.

Threat Detection and Investigation

Roman helps Lu Mi recognize danger and interpret instance clues.

  • Distracts “Mom” during a room check, drawing her away before she can expose Lu Mi 8.
  • Notices the family portrait whose arrangement matches the severed heads on the television stand 10.
  • Observes that Lu Mi returns to human form when sunlight touches him, rather than at a fixed time 10.
  • Keeps Lu Mi silent and tells him not to open his eyes when a bloodied Noel appears outside their window 28 29.
  • Compares the butler seen in Noel’s dream with the hostile figure in the present, helping develop the impostor theory 32 36.
  • Notices a figure watching them through a classroom window during their academy patrol 49.
  • Finds a concealed side entrance to the academy records room, allowing him and Lu Mi to investigate the Class Four student files 53.
  • Correctly identifies the real Lu Mi during Xie Ping’an’s test, despite the impostor embracing him and the real Lu Mi’s altered appearance within the illusion 56.
  • Helps Lu Mi escape the West Gate’s separate space by telling him to trust his friends 130.
  • Explains that the game draws power not only from gods but also from players’ fear, horror, and regret 137.
  • Identifies the apartment mirror as showing what its viewer most longs for and warns that even safe floors become dangerous outside the rooms at night 146.

Control-System Interference

Roman can interfere with the game’s administrative systems despite his initial illiteracy.

  • Steals a staff member’s access card and operates a control-center console while resisting attempts to stop him 23.
  • Alters Ning Zhuangzhuang’s program so that she continues to exist as an NPC within her instance 23 31.
  • Is subsequently banned from entering the control building 24.

Literacy and Technology

  • Initially admits that he cannot read; he buys a tabby-cat guide despite being unable to understand its text 23 24 26.
  • Recognizes a smartphone and teaches Lu Mi how to switch from recording video to taking photographs 26.
  • Begins learning basic pinyin from Lu Mi and completes assigned reading exercises beside him 45 46.
  • Learns to write his own name on the academy patrol sign-in sheet and seeks Lu Mi’s praise for his progress 51.
  • Becomes able to read enough of the Wristband’s Mall interface to order food independently 53.
  • By his return during The Artist, explicitly tells Lu Mi that he has learned to read and can locate Yu Qingchen’s grave himself 80.

Physiology

  • Does not need to eat, though he accepts fried chicken from Lu Mi 43 45.
  • Uses his mask to reduce his discomfort from the smell of blood 8.
  • Develops persistent fingernail growths during Magic Manor. Their cause is not explained; 2044 implies that Roman knows more than he admits 39 41 43.
  • His uncovered hands are notably cold 66 119.
  • Explains that he died long ago and does not need to drink water 165.

Curses and Restrictions

  • Face-revelation curse: The Spring Water Fairy curses Roman to cover his face. If anyone sees it, his soul will soon scatter into nothingness 162.
  • Confession taboo: If Roman falls in love, any attempt to reveal his true feelings in any form causes immense pain. This prevents him from answering Lu Mi’s requests for a romantic confession, rather than indicating an absence of love 162 163.
  • Safe concealment during intimacy: He can remove his mask without exposing his face if Lu Mi keeps his eyes closed or wears a blindfold 158 165.
  • Restrictions on disclosure: The Lord of Evil forbids him from revealing certain information about his past. Lu Mi repeatedly worries that Roman’s disclosures will bring punishment and eventually tells him he need not force himself to explain 137 139 140.
  • Final violation: Roman deliberately shows Lu Mi his face during their farewell despite the soul-dispersal curse 166.

Soul Communication and Locating Lu Mi

  • Says he can call to the Red-Haired Girl with his soul while gravely wounded in the Number One Stone House 118.
  • A scarf left with Lu Mi allows Roman to sense him again after their separation at Wonderful Dream. After Lu Mi removes it and Roman is trapped in The Artist instance, Roman laments that he cannot find him without it 81 82 118.
  • As a non-player, follows Lu Mi into a separate space during Five Thousand Vortices; Lu Mi attributes this access to Roman’s lack of player status 130.

Roman’s coercive jealousy at Wonderful Dream and subsequent silence about his feelings cause a serious rupture 66 81. They gradually reconcile after Companion Grave, and Lu Mi ultimately learns that Roman’s inability to confess is caused by a curse. Lu Mi declares his love and speaks Roman’s confession on his behalf; they later kiss while Lu Mi is blindfolded 122 158 162 163 165. • Shen Yiwen — Questions whether Roman is truly a player and urges Lu Mi to examine his trust and feelings rather than rely on Roman’s administrative status 65.
