Background / History

Previous Experience

Ning Zhuangzhuang is a high school junior who has already survived at least one instance before meeting Lu Mi. Xu Zhi helped her escape that earlier instance, leaving her with a favorable impression of him and considerable trust in his judgment 5 16.

Helping Lu Mi

After Lu Mi stands up for her, Ning thanks him and promises to explain the game if he survives the night. She later teaches him that clearing an instance requires finding clues and fulfilling conditions—not simply obeying its NPCs. She also warns that hidden deadlines can remove restrictions on NPC killing 2 4.

Her assistance is practical as well as informative. She gives Lu Mi shop-bought meat buns after he misses breakfast, warns him to keep cleaning despite the screams upstairs, and turns on a faucet so he can use water to clean a neglected ceiling fan before “Mom” punishes him 5 6 17.

Underground Investigation

When the players are ordered to gather flowers, Ning declines the safer decorating task with Xu Zhi and accompanies Lu Mi because he is a newcomer. The Demon Flower’s twigs drag them underground alongside Zhang Mei and Zhang Zhu 11 12.

While searching among hanging headless corpses, Ning uses a purchased flashlight and teaches Lu Mi singing techniques to ease their fear. Those lessons soon prove useful when he sings “Mom’s” song to stop the Ghost Infant’s pursuit. Ning then helps assemble its puzzle, identifies the image as the Nuwa and Fuxi Intertwined Serpents Painting, and places the final piece, opening a route back to the living room 12 13 14.

Betrayal and Sacrifice

Despite Lu Mi’s warning that the investigation is dangerous, Ning waits for him in room 208. A Jun’s severed head bewitches her and asks her to bring a mirror on the anniversary, claiming it will help defeat “Mom.” After Lu Mi intervenes, she agrees to keep the mirror’s location secret. On her return to her room, the Buddha Jade he secretly placed in her pocket protects her from “Mom,” breaking in the process 15 16 17.

Xu Zhi later uses a truth-compelling item on Ning to obtain the mirror’s location. She cannot clearly remember the encounter, and the item’s severe side effects leave her dangerously weakened. During the anniversary performance, she is also forced to play the piano under “Mom’s” control 18 19 20.

When the freed A Jun is about to kill “Mom,” Ning pushes Lu Mi away and takes the knife wound herself. She urges him to use the Buddha Jade, enabling him to restore “Mom’s” memory of her daughter after defeating A Jun. Ning subsequently explains that she acted because she trusted Lu Mi’s understanding of the instance and wanted to protect him and “my mom” 20 21.

At the exit, Ning reveals that her wristband stopped glowing long before: the system had already judged her dead. She knowingly took the knife despite that fate. As she crosses the doorway, her body dissolves into fiery red petals 21.

Continued Existence as an NPC

Roman later alters Ning’s dead-player program in the control center, making her part of the instance so that her life can continue in another form. Staff report that the alteration cannot be reversed. Roman eventually tells Lu Mi that she is still alive “in a sense,” but cannot leave the instance 23 31.

Her death continues to affect Lu Mi. He recognizes that he has been looking for traces of her in Jin Bi, and repeatedly remembers Ning while wishing he had been strong enough to save her 30 39.

Appearance

  • Described as a frail girl with a small tuft of hair at the back of her head that bobs as she walks 12.
  • Remembered by Lu Mi for her bright smile and lively movements 39.
  • Becomes pale around the lips and unsteady after Xu Zhi’s use of the truth-compelling item 18 19 20.
  • Dissolves into fiery red petals when she crosses the instance exit after her death 21.

Personality

Ning uses humor to reassure others without denying the danger around them. She teases Lu Mi, jokes about his appearance, and even briefly shines a flashlight beneath her chin to frighten him while they are trapped underground. Singing is her own way of managing fear 4 12.

Her apparent composure does not mean she is fearless. She privately admits that she is less brave than she appears, and her first instinct upon finding the Ghost Infant is to flee. Nevertheless, she chooses to investigate with Lu Mi, trusts him when temporary safety would mean abandoning clues, and ultimately faces death knowingly 11 13 16 21.

Ning is protective but capable of revising her loyalties. She initially defends Xu Zhi against Lu Mi’s suspicions; by the anniversary, her opinion of him has changed. She also challenges Lu Mi’s habit of risking himself for others and urges him to find trustworthy friends rather than shoulder every burden alone 6 7 17 20 21.
