Background / History

Ning Qiushui presents himself as a veterinarian, although he rejects the assumption that he earns his living by treating pets. Years of intense exercise have given him considerable strength and endurance. His occupation and unusual composure prompt Liu Chengfeng to question whether veterinary work fully explains his background 1 8 13 25 42.

He receives a mysterious anonymous letter less than an hour before arriving at the fog-shrouded villa that houses the Blood Gates. The experience overturns his materialist understanding of the world. Nevertheless, he leads the surviving passengers inside and volunteers to approach the first gate after learning that refusing its task will not protect them 1.

After surviving that gate, he returns home and asks his friend Mole to investigate the letter. The post office has no record of it. A second anonymous letter contains an aged photograph of Bai Xiaoxiao and an instruction that she must survive his next gate, making Ning Qiushui suspect that someone can observe him even within the Mist World 15 16.

Appearance

Ning Qiushui is described as young-looking, with a muscular build that is not obvious when he is clothed 2 4.

  • Sharply defined abdominal muscles and V-lines 4.
  • A physique described as containing explosive strength 4.

Personality

Ning Qiushui’s defining trait is his ability to act while frightened. His apparent calm is not fearlessness: his heart races on arrival, mutilated bodies nearly make him vomit, and close encounters with ghosts leave him rigid with terror. He repeatedly suppresses those reactions long enough to investigate or follow a survival rule. His composure makes him an informal anchor for frightened companions 1 5 6 9.

He is pragmatic rather than indiscriminately self-sacrificing. He will help strangers when doing so does not expose him to unacceptable danger, but resents being expected to take risks while others receive the benefits. Toward people he values, his standards change: he refuses to release Liu Chengfeng at the Everlasting Well and risks further encounters with ghosts to recover Bai Xiaoxiao 12 25 39 44.

He also uses dry humor to relieve tension, teasing Liu Chengfeng about the ghost haunting his dreams and privately calling a creature “polite” after it closes his door. He is guarded about sensitive information, withholding the anonymous letter when recounting his first gate to Bai Xiaoxiao 15 16 18.

Abilities & Skills

Investigation and Deduction

  • Questions assumptions: Points out that the woman holding a little girl’s hand is not necessarily her mother 6.
  • Connects physical evidence: Identifies knife-and-fork wounds on Wang Yuning and links them to missing kitchen utensils 5.
  • Interprets misleading clues: Corrects the apparent meaning of the housekeeper’s speech through the third-floor diary, concluding that the red-clothed woman never left the villa 11.
  • Challenges official accounts: Suspects that Rain-Praying Village’s records have reversed the roles of victims and perpetrators 25 36.
  • Reexamines task wording: Deduces that an evildoer has obstructed the promised rain and peace, then realizes that the Temple festival began when the participants arrived 33 38.

Mental Discipline and Survival Rules

  • Resists switching on a corridor light despite a ghost approaching behind him, following the letter’s warning against lighting lamps during wind 9.
  • Recognizes that the villa’s creature cannot freely attack without a triggered death condition; admits that he does not know every condition 9.
  • Remains motionless and silent while a scorched creature searches beneath his bed 18.
  • Bai Xiaoxiao considers his mental fortitude exceptional even compared with veterans of four or five gates 25.
  • His discipline does not negate supernatural paralysis: ghosts can immobilize him despite his efforts to move 23 27 49.

Physical Strength and Endurance

  • Carries the approximately 170-pound housekeeper toward the third-floor study 11.
  • Holds back the entranced Liu Chengfeng at the Everlasting Well, although he cannot overpower the force pulling him in without Bai Xiaoxiao’s help 25.
  • Runs roughly half a kilometer with little fatigue while Liu Chengfeng becomes exhausted 42.
  • Takes Bai Xiaoxiao’s body from Liu Chengfeng during their downhill escape to let his companion run faster 49.

Medical Knowledge and Sensory Observation

  • Distinguishes human blood from animal blood by smell, identifying a fresh, rusty odor 3.
  • Examines mutilated bodies closely enough to identify the implements responsible for their wounds 5.
  • Uses his medical studies as a truthful explanation for visiting the ill Mi Lan 36.

Tactical Planning

  • Organizes the first group’s chores and warns that caring for the elderly woman may be more dangerous than cooking 3.
  • Establishes a refuge by moving the housekeeper and cooked food into the Blood Jade-protected study 11.
  • Plants a single “Ruan” tablet inside Tang Jiao’s pillow, reasoning that multiple tablets would be easier for her to discover 30.
  • Uses Spirit Medium Ruan’s determination to recover a book to lure her toward Fangcun Pond, then throws it toward the water to draw her onto the ghost’s platform 42 43.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Blood Jade — Retrieved from the first gate’s study and carried into the second. It repels the Red-Clothed Female Ghost and glows or heats up around supernatural danger. Its warning function does not make Ning Qiushui immune to attacks 11 13 15 17 27 49.
  • Anonymous letters — The first supplies survival warnings for the villa. The second contains Bai Xiaoxiao’s photograph and the instruction, “She must not die in your second gate.” Their sender remains unidentified 9 15.
  • Guangchuan’s Memorial Tablet — Found on a headless corpse. Its appearance interrupts the Fangcun Pond ghost’s attack on Ning Qiushui; he also uses it to provoke a revealing reaction from Mi Lan’s husband 20 27 34.
  • “Ruan” wooden tablet — Recovered by Liu Chengfeng from the Everlasting Well and later hidden by Ning Qiushui in Tang Jiao’s pillow 25 30.
  • Bloodstained Bronze Mirror — Bai Xiaoxiao’s artifact, found beneath her pillow after she disappears. Its active supernatural power leads Ning Qiushui to infer that she remains alive. The bridal-robed ghost inside buys them time against Guang Xiu, but the already damaged mirror then shatters 39 49.
  • Spirit Medium Ruan’s book — Used as bait during her pursuit. After the Skin-Shedding Female Ghost returns it, Ning Qiushui reads its account of the Ruan Clan’s actions against Guang Xiu’s family 42 43 44.
  • Skin-Shedding Female Ghost’s eyes — Offered to Ning Qiushui and Liu Chengfeng after they bring Spirit Medium Ruan to Fangcun Pond. Ning Qiushui accepts them; their effect is not established in the supplied passages 44.

Relationships

  • Liu Chengfeng — Closest survival partner across the first two gates. Liu saves him from the Red-Clothed Female Ghost; Ning later refuses to abandon him at the Everlasting Well. Liu reveals that Ning’s was the first group’s only life hexagram 11 12 16 25.
  • Bai Xiaoxiao — Veteran guide who recognizes his potential and offers to accompany his second gate without payment. Ning seeks to save her both because of the anonymous warning and because he values her help and does not want to leave that debt unpaid 15 39 44 50.
  • Mole — Friend skilled at finding information. Investigates the anonymous correspondence and agrees to pursue the new evidence from Bai Xiaoxiao’s photograph 15 16.
  • Mu Cui — Neighbor who retrieves his second letter from the downstairs mailbox and delivers it to him 15.
  • Tang Jiao — Hostile fellow participant whose footprints reveal that she searched the trio’s rooms. Ning retaliates by hiding a “Ruan” tablet in her pillow 28 30.
  • Spirit Medium Ruan — Principal human adversary in Rain-Praying Village. Ning investigates her residence and exploits her attachment to the book to deliver her to the Fangcun Pond ghost 40 42 43.
  • Skin-Shedding Female Ghost — Initially attacks and severely injures him. After he fulfills her demand to bring Spirit Medium Ruan, she returns the book he needs and gives the two men her eyes 27 43 44.
