Arriving at Sunward Middle School, Jiang Chen looked around and discovered, with some disappointment, that no ghost as warmhearted as the old beggar from back then was waiting for him.
Two sayings came to mind.
No one would wait for you forever.
Some people, once missed, were gone for a lifetime.
Still, he was partly to blame. He had failed to control his strength back then. Otherwise, the old beggar could have left behind some mangled remains to witness just how dazzling the young man it had once risked its life to help had become.
"The ruined buildings of the Ghost School still stand, but the Starving Ghost of those days is nowhere to be seen."
Jiang Chen walked through the grounds, touching the Ghost School's crumbling walls. He entered a classroom and looked at the traces of his past battle, momentarily overcome by a rare sense of melancholy.
For a moment, he seemed to see that group of students sitting there again, turning toward him with strange grins and calling him "teacher."
Sorrow welled up in his heart as he looked at a peach tree outside the window.
He could not help blurting out a verse.
"On this day last year, within this school, ghostly faces and peach blossoms glowed red together."
"Where those ghostly faces went, I do not know; the peach blossoms still smile in the spring breeze."
After expressing his feelings and sitting in the classroom for a while, Jiang Chen seemed to feel somewhat more relaxed. Only then did he head downstairs to the sports field to get down to business.
