The female ghost froze. A mirror?
Her stiff head slowly turned.
At that moment, Jiang Chen took out the Blue Light he had prepared earlier and switched it on.
After all, half the terror in horror movies came from oppressive lighting.
So when the female ghost looked into the mirror, she saw dim, eerie blue light and a female ghost whose face was indistinct, but whose appearance was utterly hideous.
She had already assumed her most frightening appearance, intending to scare Jiang Chen to death. With this added filter amplifying the horror, she stood rooted to the spot, her pupils slowly dilating.
Then-
"Aah!!!"
She screamed and leaped into Jiang Chen's arms. Overwhelmed by terror, she had forgotten that she was a ghost herself.
Knocking Ghost was terrified. Ghost Qi +15.
"Don't be scared! I'll get you out of here!" Jiang Chen forced down his fear and comforted her. Then, carrying her bridal-style, he ran out of the bathroom and rushed toward the balcony.
At the edge of the balcony, he panted, "Don't worry about me! You go first!"
The female ghost froze, a flicker of emotion crossing her eyes. "We'll leave together!"
But Jiang Chen looked resolute. He gave her a sorrowful smile, then firmly shook his head. "Someone has to stay behind to hold off the vicious ghost in the mirror. If we both try to leave, neither of us will survive."
As he spoke, he approached the edge of the balcony and lifted her out over empty air. Then he gently lowered his head and kissed her pallid forehead. "Wenwen, stay alive."
Sister Hong had told him earlier that Sun Fang's best friend was named Li Yiwen.
Knocking Ghost's heart fluttered. Ghost Qi +20.
Jiang Chen's eyes lit up. He had only been trying his luck; he hadn't expected such a big payoff.
Then he let go with both hands.
The female ghost fell from the twelfth floor.
Bam!!!
A tremendous crash rang out. Even the concrete ground seemed to have cracked.
This was another of Jiang Chen's experiments. He had held off on using the Monster Transformation Card because he wanted to see whether an ordinary person could kill a ghost.
Soon, another notification sounded in his ears, making it clear that he had failed.
Knocking Ghost realized: This is the twelfth floor! He wasn't letting me leave first-he was trying to send me to my grave! That bastard! Ghost Qi +30.
"I'll make you die a horrible death!!" The female ghost's enraged voice rose from below.
Then Jiang Chen heard another spine-chilling sound-a scraping, like fingernails clawing at a concrete wall. Something seemed to occur to him, and he looked down. The sight sent a chill through his heart.
On the concrete wall, a woman with a grotesquely contorted body, dripping blood all over, was climbing upward at a terrifying speed.
Jiang Chen sucked in a sharp breath. Although he had never seen any other ghosts, he felt that this Knocking Ghost was probably one of the stronger ones.
He let out a long breath. He knew he had no choice now but to fight for his life.
Use the Monster Transformation Card-General Yin!
He growled inwardly.
The next instant, an immense force surged from his chest into every part of his body. He felt as though magma were roaring through his veins. His muscles bulged and knotted, and he grew to nearly two meters tall.
His blood boiled. With that ancient power coursing through him, Jiang Chen could barely resist throwing his head back and howling.
Ding! Randomly acquired Divine Ability—Azure Tiger Roar!
Understanding dawned within Jiang Chen. He could feel a faint black energy flowing through his body. This was the so-called demonic power, and a Divine Ability was a way of wielding it.
By then, the scraping had drawn close, reaching just beneath the balcony.
Jiang Chen leaned halfway over the railing. The instant he saw the female ghost, his face lit up with delight. "Thank goodness, you're still alive! I forgot this was the twelfth floor."
He reached out, his expression utterly sincere. "Quick! I'll pull you up!"
The female ghost paused, then let out a sinister laugh. "All right. Pull me up!"
She no longer believed a word of his nonsense. She extended her pallid Ghost Hand, determined to let him experience the despair of falling from the twelfth floor too.
The instant the Ghost Hand grasped Jiang Chen's, a searing heat struck her, as though she had encountered her natural predator.
The female ghost's palm was scorched. Ghost Qi +10.
She froze at once, vaguely sensing that something was wrong.
But Jiang Chen gave her no chance to react. He kicked off the ground and sprang over the balcony, wrenching her downward with his powerful hand and swinging her like a hammer.
A man and a ghost plummeted twelve floors, with Jiang Chen's full-strength downward swing adding to their fall. The combined force erupted in a terrifying crash.
Boom!
The concrete exploded, leaving a deep crater. The Knocking Ghost's body no longer resembled a human form; she had been reduced to little more than a heap of mangled flesh.
"Aah!!!"
She let out a shrill scream of pain, her venomous gaze seeming ready to devour everything.
Jiang Chen gave her no chance to catch her breath. He bent down, his eyes icy, and opened his mouth. The demonic power within him surged and roared, moving almost instinctively as it transformed into a terrifying tiger's roar.
"Roar!!!"
The sound swept outward, nearly warping the air. The female ghost's eyes widened in terror as her body disintegrated bit by bit, turning to ash.
"No..."
Ding! Knocking Ghost (vicious ghost) has died. Ghost Qi +99.
The notification made Jiang Chen's eyes light up. Ninety-nine points of Ghost Qi were an unexpected bonus.
He had chosen to finish her off because his earlier antics had already earned him 110 Ghost Qi, enough for another draw. Now he could draw twice.
"What does 'vicious ghost' in the parentheses mean? Is that a ghost's rank?" Jiang Chen muttered. Without dwelling on it, he turned and headed upstairs.
Not a trace of the Knocking Ghost's remains was left, only a large crater. It probably wouldn't cause a panic. There might even be specialized personnel coming to clean up, but none of that had anything to do with him.
When he reached apartment 1202, Sister Hong was kneeling limply against a living room wall, staring toward the balcony. Her eyes were red as she wiped away her tears.
"Xiao Chen, why did you do something so foolish...?"
While Jiang Chen had been talking to the Knocking Ghost, Sister Hong had realized who was outside.
He was the young man who had rented the apartment opposite hers for over a year. She lived alone, and sometimes when she cooked too much, she would invite Jiang Chen over for a meal. Apart from that, they had little contact and weren't particularly close.
But Sister Hong had never expected Jiang Chen to risk his life to save her when a terrifying ghost came knocking.
When she rushed out of the bedroom, she had seen Jiang Chen jump from the twelfth floor with the female ghost in tow. To Sister Hong, it looked as though he had sacrificed himself to take the ghost down with him.
There was no way he could survive a fall from that height. At the thought, Sister Hong cried until her eyes were swollen.
"Knock... knock..."
Just then, someone knocked on the security door.
Sister Hong's body instantly tensed. When she saw that the person entering was a man rather than the female ghost, she breathed a sigh of relief. But once she recognized Jiang Chen's face, she went pale again.
"X-Xiao Chen, are you human or a ghost?"
Jiang Chen: "..."
After a brief moment of stunned silence, Sister Hong lit up with delight. A smile bloomed on her womanly face like a beautiful rose. She ran over and squeezed Jiang Chen's arm.
"Thank goodness! You really are still alive! I nearly died of guilt just now!"
"Such solid muscles! You could rival a bodybuilding champion. You've been hiding your talents, Xiao Chen!"
"Oh, right, that ghost..."
