Arc 1Little Jie’s Third Calamity

Wu Jie grew up surrounded by foxes and weasels, while the Immortal within him repeatedly intervened to protect him and others from deadly spirits. On his ninth birthday, Old Man Wang’s powerful ghost possessed him, and several strangers arrived offering cures with different conditions.

  • Wu Jie was born beneath nineteen lightning bolts, and Wu Banxian identified him as a demon fetus possessed by a powerful fox demon before dying as he carried the child away.
  • Foxes and weasels brought game to the Wu family, but villagers blamed Wu Jie for deaths, including the deaths of Ma Laosan’s wife and others who threatened him.
  • Granny Liu helped the family defeat Ma Laosan’s Corpse Demon, but warned that Wu Jie faced a calamity every three years and must stay inside on his ninth birthday.
  • After the Zhang brothers offended a Yellow Immortal, Granny Liu expelled the spirit possessing the fifth brother, while the second brother became possessed by a stronger weasel until Wu Jie’s Ancestor intervened.
  • On Wu Jie’s ninth birthday, he left home with Xiao Pang, and a series of accidents injured Xiao Pang and Grandpa Wang, who later died.
  • Granny Liu suspected Grandpa Wang’s death aura had endangered Wu Jie, but Old Man Wang’s powerful spirit possessed the boy and suppressed both Granny Liu’s Chang Immortal and Wu Jie’s Immortal.
  • As Wu Jie remained feverish and near death, Jueming offered to cure him if he became his disciple, Shen Xiuyuan offered help without that condition, and another man proposed making Wu Jie a future husband and disciple to his daughter.

Arc 2The Zhang Family Graves

Wu Jie left home to begin his apprenticeship and took his first job outside Yanbei, investigating the Zhang Family’s corrupted ancestral graves. After uncovering a ritual attack and confronting a possessed Zhang Yucheng and an awakened jiangshi, Wu immobilized the jiangshi while a hidden figure remained at large.

  • Li Xuantong drew the black qi from Little Jie, accepted him as his disciple, and took him away from his family to train for ten years.

  • Wu Jie refused Zhang Yucheng’s first request for help because it was in Yanbei, but agreed to inspect the Zhang Family’s ancestral graves in Yongfeng County.
  • Wu Jie found ritual objects buried at the graves, including a tortured cat, decapitated snakes, and a grudge bone, and warned that moving the ancestors’ preserved bodies could awaken the dead.
  • Wu Jie began relocating the coffins, then returned to the Zhang Family residence when an unclean spirit possessed Zhang Yucheng and later Steward Wang.
  • After Uncle Huzi reported that Zhang Yunliang was digging up coffins, Wu Jie and Zhang Yunyao returned to the cemetery and found Zhang Yunliang gathering corpse oil beneath an awakened ancestor.
  • Wu Jie freed Zhang Yunliang from an evil spell, then fought the jiangshi as it attacked him and Zhang Yunyao.
  • Wu Jie immobilized the jiangshi with a corpse-suppressing talisman, but spotted a dark figure among the trees who might have controlled Zhang Yunliang.
