After deciding on his ultimate direction, he divided the combat system he had designed for himself into four main parts, requiring a combination of four kinds of abilities.
In gaming terms, it would roughly look like this:
First, redeem an ability that actively drained his health. While gradually gaining power, he would drain himself to the brink of death, then immediately enter his strongest state and trigger his other abilities.
Second, redeem some burst abilities, such as passive effects that increased his damage the lower his health fell.
Third, redeem a life-steal ability that grew stronger the lower his health was.

The first and fourth parts formed the core of the entire combat system, while the second and third were the keys to creating a loop.
As long as he could complete that loop, his damage would rise as his health fell.
Higher damage meant more life steal, and more life steal meant faster recovery. Once he recovered, he could drain his health again to unleash another burst.
That would make him something like a perpetual motion machine.
If he could build this combat system, his strength would grow explosively, giving him a real chance of fighting those alien races.
But the first issue with the entire combat system was how to get it started.
