Background / History
Service to Wei Zheng
Wei An served Wei Zheng for most of his life, beginning as his study attendant. Wei Zheng released his servitude contract, bestowed the family surname upon him, and treated him almost as family. His work involved important affairs rather than routine household staffing, giving him knowledge of Wei Zheng’s friendships and connections throughout the Capital 1 15 23 41.
Saving Wei Nisheng
After Wei Nisheng’s birth, Wei Mingde privately ordered that no one feed the infant. Wei An carried Wei Zheng’s spirit tablet into the main hall, knelt before Mingde, and accused him of betraying both his father’s wishes and his deceased elder brother’s lineage. He threatened to expose the attempted starvation throughout the Capital, forcing Mingde to withdraw 1.
The intervention saved Nisheng but earned Mingde’s hostility. Wei An was sent to the secluded Side Courtyard under the pretext of caring for the child, effectively sharing his exile. Over the following ten years, he quietly patched window gaps, maintained Nisheng’s clothing, and supported his studies. When a childhood punishment left Nisheng’s knees purple and stiff, Wei An secretly carried him back and treated them with hot towels 1 4.
Supporting Nisheng’s Resistance
Wei An’s protection became openly confrontational when Wang Rong tried to seize Nisheng. He struck the servant down and stood between them. During Nisheng’s first outing, he also restrained Cui Fu and supported Nisheng’s threat to expose Cui Fu’s intended disreputable excursion 7 8.
After Nisheng killed Wang Rong, Wei An argued that the servant’s insults and defiance justified his death under Great Zhou law and Wei family rules. Nisheng nevertheless insisted on public admissions of wrongdoing from his family rather than accepting an immediate reconciliation 13.
At Nisheng’s request, Wei An then mobilized acquaintances from his years with Wei Zheng to circulate a favorable account of the killing. The story spread through the Capital, and Nisheng subsequently received the emperor’s praise. Wei An urged him to use that recognition by attending Wei Shouzheng’s apprenticeship banquet 14 15 16 17.
Securing Independence
Wei An explained the Eldest Branch’s inheritance arrangements and why Mingde coveted its property. After finding no useful support from the clan, he supplied Nisheng with details of Wei Zheng’s friendship with Feng Yan, including Feng’s promise at Zheng’s funeral to look after the Wei family. He personally delivered Nisheng’s calling card outside the Wei Residence’s usual channels and returned with news that Feng would reply 5 23 24.
During the later estate confrontation, Wei An fetched Feng Yan’s sealed letter. Its arrival allowed Nisheng to invoke the former chief grand secretary’s backing and leave the ancestral hall unharmed. The following day, Wei An completed the property registrations, defeating Mingde and Cui Shi’s plan to transfer the estate to Wei Shoucheng 38 40.
When they left the Wei Residence together, Nisheng thanked Wei An for keeping him alive and enabling his education. He declared Wei An his elder and promised that the Capital Wei would eventually enshrine him alongside Wei Zheng, with ancestral offerings for a hundred generations. Wei An knelt and wept at the promise 40.
The New Household
Wei An revealed the existence of a small inherited courtyard outside West Peace Gate, resolving Nisheng’s immediate need for a home. He recommended Cui Fu as a useful local contact and helped bring him into the new household. After Qu Niang’s purchase, he arranged her quarters and placed her under two older serving women for instruction 41 43 46.
He initially questioned Nisheng’s plan to become Feng Yan’s true disciple, warning that the retired statesman’s age and political exposure made the choice dangerous. After Nisheng explained his intention to inherit Feng’s network and protect the Feng family, Wei An accepted the decision and pledged to follow him as he had followed Wei Zheng 49.
Appearance
Wei An is introduced as a man in his forties with a slightly stooped back and a face compared to an old block of wood 1.
- Graying temples — visible as snow settles in his hair 1.
- Unassuming posture — usually hunched, but stands straight and imposing when protecting Nisheng from Wang Rong 7.
- Plain clothing — wears a gray cotton-padded robe and an old felt hat while discreetly arranging the spread of rumors 15.
Personality
Wei An is taciturn and expresses affection through practical care rather than speeches. Nisheng recognizes his concern in repaired windows, adjusted clothing, warm water, and years of quiet support. Despite having his freedom and the option of a peaceful retirement, he treats the childless household’s neglected son as his own child 1 14 40 49.
His restraint disappears when Nisheng is threatened. He challenges Mingde over the infant’s starvation and physically intervenes against Wang Rong. At the same time, he is cautious about long-term risks: he questions Cui Fu’s motives and warns Nisheng against becoming dependent on an aging political patron 1 7 43 49.
Wei An remains willing to reconsider his judgments. He acknowledges that his concern for Nisheng can narrow his thinking, and ultimately respects Nisheng’s decisions about both household recruitment and Feng Yan’s patronage 42 44 49.
