Background / History
Military Heritage
Jiang Jingcheng comes from a family whose ancestors earned their standing through warfare. He regards martial training, battlefield service, and military merit as the proper inheritance of a Jiang son. His loyalty to the throne is reinforced by the Former Emperor’s generous treatment of the family 1 2.
The deaths of his eldest and second sons leave Jiang Xiaobai as his only surviving son. Meanwhile, the reigning emperor wants to reclaim Jiang Jingcheng’s military command, placing the household’s succession at the center of its political vulnerability 2 29.
The Purchased Top Scholar Title
Jiang Jingcheng first appears punishing Jiang Xiaobai for refusing martial training and buying first place in the imperial examination. Beyond the insult to the family’s traditions, he recognizes that the fraud could be prosecuted as deceiving the emperor 1.
He vehemently rejects Xiaobai’s suggestion of rebellion. Instead, he proposes having his son marry into another household: leaving the Jiang Family nominally without an heir would reassure the emperor that its military authority would eventually return to the throne 2.
Several families refuse the match because of Xiaobai’s reputation. Jiang Jingcheng then takes him to a poetry gathering at the Chancellor’s Residence and secretly coordinates preparations with a general. Xiaobai interprets those preparations as a plan to abduct whichever woman he chooses and force a marriage; the abduction is not shown taking place 2 3.
Alliance with the Li Family
Jiang Jingcheng expressly forbids Xiaobai from choosing Li Zhiwei. He fears humiliation before her father, his political rival Li Bingzhang, and believes an alliance between a military clan and the leader of the civil officials would arouse imperial suspicion 3 4.
When Xiaobai nevertheless names Li Zhiwei, Jiang Jingcheng erupts in anger. He eventually agrees to give his son time after Xiaobai argues that only a powerful household could protect them if the purchased title were part of an imperial trap 15.
Xiaobai subsequently becomes Lin Fengshuo’s disciple. Jiang Jingcheng publicly condemns his choice of a literary teacher, then privately laughs with pride. He admits to Shen Yun that the scholarly path may offer their son a future and that Lin Fengshuo’s name provides additional protection 28 29.
Following Xiaobai’s advice, Jiang Jingcheng keeps the visiting Li family waiting outside for two hours. During the ensuing negotiations, he learns of Xiaobai’s literary ability and broader strategy. He particularly enjoys the proposal to portray the marriage as coercion by the Li household, preserving the Jiang Family’s dignity at Li Bingzhang’s expense 31 32 34 36.
The betrothal is finalized, and Jiang Jingcheng and Li Bingzhang share an awkward toast despite their continuing hostility 38.
His Eldest Son’s Warning
After the guests leave, Jiang Jingcheng questions Xiaobai about the risks behind his schemes. Once Xiaobai explains that he is acting for the family’s survival, Jiang Jingcheng acknowledges his growing maturity and reveals a concealed letter from his eldest son 39 40.
The bloodstained letter warns, “Beware of the Elder Princess!” News of the eldest son’s fate arrived shortly after the letter. Jiang Jingcheng investigated Xiao Yunshu but found no concrete leads 40.
He permits Xiaobai to continue investigating his brothers’ deaths, warning him against impulsiveness and trusting people from the Imperial Palace. He also asks him to conceal the letter from Shen Yun. Before leaving, Xiaobai tells his father to stay home and feign illness during the upcoming imperial audience 40.
Appearance
Jiang Jingcheng is middle-aged, with a stern expression and an imposing bearing 1 31.
- Straight posture: He sits upright even during ordinary household conversations 31.
- General’s uniform: When formally receiving the Li family and Lin Fengshuo, his immaculate uniform and rigid shoulders emphasize his appearance as a battle-hardened commander 33.
- Intimidating presence: His arrival at the Chancellor’s Residence makes its gate guards visibly uneasy 4.
Personality
Jiang Jingcheng is hot-tempered, domineering, and deeply concerned with family honor. He frequently calls Xiaobai an “unfilial son” and threatens him with his saber when angered. His contempt for civil officials stems from his belief that they claim credit for military victories while leaving generals to bear the blame 1 15 28.
His attachment to martial tradition does not outweigh his desire to keep his last son alive. He tolerates Li Bingzhang’s insults for Xiaobai’s sake, accepts an unconventional marriage arrangement, and privately welcomes the protection offered by a literary master 14 29 38.
He often disguises concern as sarcasm or anger. While waiting anxiously for Xiaobai’s return, he pretends not to care; after the discipleship succeeds, he explains that his scolding was intended to keep the boy from becoming conceited 28 29.
