On Earth-19, in a Gotham filled with industrial fumes and sewer steam, the gas lamps provided only feeble illumination, while the city's residents, as always, prepared to begin another day of "nightlife."
Gotham was Gotham. No matter the era, the nights were always livelier than the days.
But today was different. Just as the moon rose to the middle of the sky, darkness suddenly swallowed heaven and earth. A few seconds later, the moon vanished, replaced by an enormous symbol of Destruction that filled the entire sky.
It had originally been green, but the black smoke in the air made it appear an eerie purple from the ground.
Cries of alarm rose throughout the city. People threw open their doors and windows and ran into the streets, feeling a terrifying pressure emanating from the emblem.
"What is this unclean filth?!"
A fat middle-aged man knocked off his glasses and collapsed onto the slick pavement. The damp night air quickly soaked through his fine overcoat.
