The morning breeze carried a slight chill. Peter hadn't noticed how fast he was riding, or how many pedestrians he had frightened.

He wasn't late. When he rushed into the classroom, several girls gave him meaningful looks.

That confirmed Peter's suspicion. So it really was those spiders? They had changed all of them.

After the first class, the girls slipped up to the roof of the school building with him. Cindy from the neighboring class had come as well, and they held a group discussion.

"That scared me to death. When I woke up this morning, I found myself clinging to the ceiling." MJ was the first to share her experience, patting her chest. "Good thing my parents didn't see me, or I wouldn't have known how to explain it."

Mary looked at the more handsome Peter, then lowered her head to look at her own hands, clearly worried. "Mine was about the same. What do we do now? Will being bitten by spiders change our genes? How am I supposed to tell Harry?"

"Don't tell him. Don't tell anyone. Your boyfriend's family researches biotechnology. Mr. Stark said it yesterday—biologists have no humanity at all. They'd dissect even the people closest to them." Gwen took her friend's hand and shook her head repeatedly. "Besides, I've always kind of wanted superpowers. This way, we can become superheroes too. What do you think?"

"Isn't your dad the commissioner of the New York Police Department?" Liz rested her head on Gwen's shoulder and slowly shook it. "I heard he hates Masked Vigilantes most of all."
