The Gotham River's current was not swift. Its surface was broad and calm, like a giant mirror.

Since the entire city could essentially be seen as three large islands and a heap of smaller ones, the river was more like seawater circling the city before returning to the ocean.

Of course, that round trip added many Gotham characteristics to it. For instance, all sorts of colorful wastewater flowed into it, along with countless corpses in varying stages of decay that washed in from the sewers.

The famous asylum stood on Arkham Island, beneath Three Gates Bridge spanning the Gotham River. Like a triangular wedge, it was lodged between the New City District and the Upper East Side.

The island's total area was considerably larger than Manhattan in New York, yet with its jagged, rocky terrain, there was not much usable land.

The choicest section had been used to build an asylum that occupied roughly a third of the island, housing Gotham's most outstanding talents. Fully armed guards attended to their daily needs around the clock.

De Angeli Wastewater Treatment Plant was also on Arkham Island, and Batwoman knew there was a secret passage there. It could cross the Gotham River along the cables and lead to Gotham Power Station on the opposite bank.

But he could not move, because he had high-level paraplegia.
