That item had been created over ten thousand years ago, during the Burning Legion's first invasion, when Neltharion of the Dragon Aspects ordered his Pukwudgie craftsmen to make it. By then, he had already been tempted by the whispers of the Old God N'Zoth, and he intended to create an artifact that would make him the ruler of the world.
The Dragon Aspects had originally been created by the Titans as security guards tasked with protecting Azeroth. Each embodied a different "concept," and under normal circumstances, their strength was roughly even in a one-on-one fight. Neltharion, who represented "earth," might have been slightly stronger, but only slightly.
However, the Burning Legion's invasion came at just the right time and gave him a perfect opportunity to deceive his brethren. He brought out the disc and persuaded the other four Dragon Aspects to pour their source power into it to fight Sargeras.
Once they heard that protecting Azeroth was indeed the Dragons' responsibility, they agreed.
So they all complied, contributing some of their source energy and concepts to the Demon Soul. When it was finally the Black Dragon King's turn to infuse it with power, he suddenly turned hostile and fled with the
