The pyramid clearly held plenty of ancient technology. Its lighting still worked, and office equipment and data disks lay scattered around, apparently abandoned when the Rebel Alliance evacuated.

The forest was hot and humid, but the interior was cool, well ventilated, and comfortable.

The Rebel Alliance had shown some judgment in choosing this place for a base. The temple seemed to have been carved out of a mountain as a single structure. At least Su Ming could see no seams.

"It should be nearby. We take the elevator to the top floor, then head for the summit."

Su Ming walked beside Barriss, her robe rustling as it dragged across the floor.

"I'm no historian, but this place seems valuable." Master Offee reached out to touch a relief on the corridor wall. It depicted battles fought by the Je'daii. "I can't believe the Rebel Alliance built a base somewhere so precious to the Jedi. And the Death Star nearly blew it up."

"The Rebel Alliance never considered the Jedi their own. They just needed their swords." Deathstroke waved a hand dismissively, brushing away the dust before him. "Be realistic, Barriss. That's politics."

The Jedi Master said nothing. She merely looked at the open elevators and gestured for him to go ahead.

The elevator moved fast, almost at the limit of what a human could endure. It had clearly been built for the Je'daii.

At the top, they stepped into a vast hall. Sunlight streamed through the opening in the ceiling, bathing everything in gold.

"All right, now I see why they chose this place. It's beautiful." Even the Jedi Master was moved by the thousands of square meters of empty, golden splendor before her.

People had always liked gold. The attraction seemed written into their DNA.
