Of course, that "story that had never existed" ended badly.

After the cats became rulers of the Megaverse, they discovered they were even worse at it than humans.

Every cat was either obsessed with breeding or spent all day squatting at home watching TV and smoking catnip. Not a single cat was willing to work.

Forget technological research or studying magic—even their former favorite activity of catching mice had been handed over to their foolish human pets.

The cats opened their eyes every day and ate. After eating, they basked in the sun and slept. When they were in a good mood, they went out into the streets to find other cats to fuck.

Even though, in this story, they wore the fine clothes humans had once worn, walked upright, and enjoyed the technological achievements and social structures humans had left behind, they were still predators, not creators.

Modern society had no need for predators.

Their imagination and capacity for innovation were also woefully lacking, so those universes ultimately destroyed themselves through internal strife. At the end of the story, the surviving cats returned to city ruins overgrown with trees and moss, becoming ignorant beasts once more.

So after seeing all that, Dream of a Thousand Cats gave up. It realized that cats simply were not cut out for it and were better off continuing to live symbiotically alongside humans.

It canceled the dream and restored everything to how it had been. No one even knew the DC Universe had once staged such a farce.

And so, the dream ended. Humanity remained Earth's ruler, the sun rose as usual, and Gotham was still the same old Gotham.

The cats' dream went to the Dreaming and returned to First Dream, making Dream whole once more.
