At first, things went smoothly. Raleigh took care of two Kaiju, then joined Mako in hammering the Turtle Shell Kaiju. It felt like they were barely scratching it after it withdrew into its shell, but that also meant it could not fight back. Its death was inevitable.
Raleigh estimated the battle would end within thirty seconds. They would not even need to call out the next activation phrase.
But then things changed. The turtle in front of them "bloomed." It truly bloomed in the literal sense.
Its carapace had originally been solid and thick, like a blue mountain formed from some special crystal. At its peak was a structure capable of firing beams of light as an attack. Yet as the two of them bombarded the little mountain rising from the sea, its carapace opened automatically like a lotus.
Then, enormous amounts of Black Mud poured out from within, and the Kaiju let out a scream.
Raleigh had fought Kaiju more times than he could count, but he had never heard them scream so miserably. What was especially strange was that he seemed to hear a trace of pleasurable relief within that scream.
If he had not seen the monster's savage face and its wildly flailing limbs, he might have thought it was real.
Along with the massive amount of Black Mud came thick black smoke. The turtle seemed to have become a volcano, or a chocolate fountain at a party.
The black sludge flowed into the sea, contaminating it. The fish that had previously been electrocuted had been floating on the surface, but upon touching the substance, they began wriggling like maggots and quickly came back to life. Only fish heads remained above the water as they let out strange laughter.
