The Anti-Life Equation was something like mysticism draped in the skin of science. It was a string of formulas, and also a way of exploiting the rules of the universe.

It was not a power capable of controlling the universe. If the universe was a great machine running according to its own established program, then it was a built-in cheat code. Enter it, and one could obtain specific effects. The principle behind it was unknown; at least to humans, it seemed deeply mystical. The way to resist it was equally subjective: "willpower."

Willpower could neither be seen nor touched, and there was no standard for measuring it. All Su Ming knew was that Batman's willpower was unquestionably the strongest. It was practically capable of anything.

For example, if someone tried to use Mind Control on Batman and he shrugged it off, that was willpower at work. Or if every bone in Batman's body was shattered, yet he could still rise and keep fighting—that was also the effect of willpower.

This power could help people accomplish things humans were not supposed to be able to do. Whenever people had asked Batman how he did it, though, he would only recite a famous line.
