In the world of Cyberpunk 2077, interrogating the dead was nothing hard to understand. The deceased here had a certain chance of providing intelligence after death, provided they had cybernetic eye implants.

After a person died, technical means could still be used to read some of the cached files in their cybernetic eyes, until bioelectricity stopped supplying power—commonly known as brain death.

Even a few minutes of cached footage could sometimes contain a great deal of information. Of course, it often also contained plenty of bloody scenes. Quite a few "Black Braindances" came from this.

A Braindance, in its original sense, was a super-real dream. It could be seen as a VR movie projected directly into the mind. Because it acted directly on the nervous system, it could reproduce the smells, touch, sounds, and other sensations in the footage, making people feel as though they were truly there.

But precisely because it appeared directly in the brain, it was extremely easy to become addicted to it, even to the point of being unable to distinguish the recording from reality. Many people became hooked, and some content could even trigger Cyberpsychosis.

It was more like a psychological drug. No matter how much of a failure someone was in reality, they could experience the feeling of being above others in a Braindance and enjoy things they could never have in the Material World.

Real food, luxurious cars, gentle and beautiful women, the lives of the rich—all of it existed in those dreams.

The darker and crueler reality became, the fewer choices people had. Sometimes it came down to only two paths: resist or escape.

Clearly, resistance was too difficult a road. Even Johnny had died walking it. Escaping reality was easier and more useful.
