"From what I can tell so far, this family must have come to Gotham from elsewhere. The youngest child was celebrating a birthday, yet no relatives or neighbors came by. That says a lot."

In reality, the United States was not quite like it was portrayed in most American TV dramas.

Calling parents by their names, endless family problems, children having to work at a young age to survive meaning the family had a terrible relationship—much of that was artistic embellishment meant to add conflict to a story.

In fact, most Americans valued family greatly, not all that differently from China. Though it had not quite reached the level of "family and nation," whenever something happened within a clan, relatives were generally more than willing to help.

So if Christopher had been a Gotham local, there was no reason for only the five members of the family to celebrate his youngest daughter's birthday by themselves. The house was not small at all; they could easily have invited more guests.

Therefore, on the day of the fire, the family had probably only recently arrived in Gotham, to the point that they did not even know their neighbors.
