Rome was Italy's capital and largest city, as well as the nation's political, economic, cultural, and transportation center. With a history of more than 2,500 years, it was a world-famous historical and cultural city, the birthplace of the Ancient Roman Empire, nicknamed the "Eternal City" for its long history.

Rome was the center of the Catholic Church worldwide, with over seven hundred churches and monasteries. Along with Florence, Rome had been a center of the Italian Renaissance and still retained an abundance of Renaissance and Baroque character.

Magnificent domed buildings, windows and glass in every color, all manner of extravagantly ornate sculptures, fountains with scantily clad, highly artistic figures—these could be seen at nearly every intersection.
