Still, it would do. During World War II, Japan had requisitioned many civilian vessels to transport supplies. For such a slow, large ship not to have been sunk and then to be recovered after the war was already a blessing.

"Ho-ha!" Perhaps Tokyo innkeepers had seen more foreigners, because his response was exceptionally proper.

First, he dropped to his knees and kowtowed. Then he sat formally in the style of a samurai, accepted the order with a solemn expression, and crawled backward out of the cabin.

Natasha curled her lip in distaste. She wasn't used to being waited on.

Su Ming, on the other hand, was quite satisfied. Sitting on the low platform, he pushed open the window to let in the wind. "See? Japan's service industry really does it well. You have to admit that. Have you ever seen anyone in the United States kneel down to take an order?"
