Background / History

Huang graduated from the police academy and says he exercises every day. His police work gives him access to information unavailable to most Awakened, including records of the Gu Family Village massacre and disappearances investigated by his retired mentor 12 30 39.

He fell in love with his wife in high school, before awakening. Although he came to believe she was a Beast, he never tested her and initially assumed she was a Lost One. Her unusual behavior later made him fear that she had discovered his human identity 20 21.

Before meeting Gaoyang and Qingling, Huang had failed an Awakened organization’s assessment. He remained an outside operative whose contact assigned errands and occasionally shared restricted information; he was neither a full member nor entitled to communicate directly with the organization’s leadership 21.

Personality

Huang is composed under pressure and accustomed to directing others. Even after Qingling severs two of his fingers and holds a blade against his throat, he does not panic. His conversational humor also survives dangerous situations: he jokes that Gaoyang resembles a long-lived comic-book protagonist whose companions are unlikely to survive 12 25.

His caution can become ruthless. He kills an exposed Awakened to spare him torture or consumption by Beasts and prevent Gaoyang from being implicated. Later, when investigation fails to provide an escape from Gu Family Village, he supports attacking its inhabitants, though he accepts Gaoyang’s request for another day to investigate 12 47.

Love limits that ruthlessness. Huang regrets arranging his wife’s assassination once he learns that pregnancy—not suspicion—explains her behavior. He chooses to let their child be born and maintains that his love for her would remain real even if she eventually transformed and killed him 20 21 33.
