Squelch!
Fang Xiu pulled out the Scalpel.
Thud!
Wu Dahai's bulky body fell to the floor.
Just then, his coworkers suddenly stopped moving. Every one of them stood rigid as a zombie, their faces turning as pale as corpses. Even Zhao Hao was no exception.
A moment later, his coworkers moved. All their bodies began twisting grotesquely, their necks and spines bending into exaggerated, inhuman curves.
The muscles all over their bodies writhed and swelled like boiling water.
"About to transform?" Fang Xiu murmured. "Then I'll interrupt the casting."
He wasn't about to stand there like an idiot and wait for them to transform, as people did in TV shows.
Fang Xiu went all out. Bolstered by his Spirituality, he lunged toward them with the agility of a hunting cheetah.
One stab, two stabs, three stabs...
Silver light flashed through the room.
By the time Fang Xiu stopped, he had reached the other end of the office.
In that single second, he had crossed the entire office and opened a hole in every person's neck.
Thud, thud, thud...
The sounds of bodies hitting the floor rang out one after another.
Then a series of cracks sounded behind Fang Xiu.
"The Female Physician? I've been waiting."
He turned around. The familiar Female Physician had appeared behind him, her long limbs hanging from the ceiling. Thick black hair dangled down, saliva occasionally dripping from her gaping, blood-red maw. Her eyes, nothing but whites, stared fixedly at Fang Xiu.
Suddenly, the Female Physician lunged at Fang Xiu like a phantom.
This time, however, Fang Xiu did not resist. He stood calmly where he was and waited for her attack.
Whoosh!
The Female Physician's deathly pale, ghostly hand struck viciously at Fang Xiu's neck.
But the next moment, something astonishing happened. Her hand passed straight through Fang Xiu's neck, as though through empty air.
"Had enough fun? If you have, come out." Fang Xiu calmly surveyed his surroundings.
In an instant, the Female Physician vanished, along with all the corpses on the floor. Even the entire sales office shattered like a mirror.
Behind the fragments lay the escape passage of Green Mountain Psychiatric Hospital.
A bright emergency exit sign hung on the wall.
Beside Fang Xiu, Zhao Hao and the other two lay sprawled on the floor. Their faces were twisted with terror, their bodies covered in haphazard wounds. None of them were breathing.
Fang Xiu slowly rose from the floor. In the darkness, a pair of scarlet Ghost eyes stared fixedly at him.
The eyes seemed to have no true physical form. They were enveloped in a mass of shapeless black smoke that churned constantly.
"A dream? So this is your ability," Fang Xiu said calmly.
A strange voice came from the eyes wrapped in black smoke, hoarse and grating enough to set his teeth on edge.
"How did you see through the dream?"
"Your dream was very realistic, and you understand humans well. Unfortunately, you don't understand silicone."
"Silicone?" The Ghost eyes seemed not to understand.
He asked again, "Why weren't you afraid?"
"Oh?" Fang Xiu gave a quiet sound of surprise. "So you kill through fear? The more frightened someone is in your dream, the faster they die. No wonder there was a list of the dead, and dead people came back to life to call me in to work.
"Honestly, I'm delighted to see a brand-new Ghost again. But I really didn't like the dream you just created. You actually dared to create a world without Ghosts. Is that something a Ghost should be doing?"
The Ghost eyes in the black smoke said nothing. He merely stared hard at Fang Xiu, as though committing his appearance to memory.
A moment later, he slowly faded away and disappeared.
Fang Xiu looked at Zhao Hao and the other two, who had died gruesome deaths. He had already pieced together what had happened.
This was a Ghost capable of manipulating dreams, and he was also the one who had scared off the Female Physician.
If Fang Xiu's deductions were correct, the Female Physician was probably the weakest Ghost in all of Green Mountain Psychiatric Hospital.
That was because she had become a Ghost in a different way from the others.
The other Ghosts seemed to have been transformed from humans through experiments.
The Female Physician, however, had never undergone any experiments. She had merely been infected by the Scalpel and turned into a Ghost. There was a fundamental difference between the two.
That was evident from her lack of special abilities and her simplistic, rigid rules for killing.
Oh, right—the Female Physician wasn't entirely without something special. At least her legs were exceptionally long, over two meters.
Precisely because they had become Ghosts through different means, their strength was worlds apart. The Female Physician had been scared off the moment she saw a true Ghost.
The dream-controlling Ghost had probably escaped from the ward whose door had been opened.
While Fang Xiu and the others were resting, he had used some unknown means to put them to sleep, then slipped silently into their dreams to create fear.
The more afraid you were, the faster you would die in the dream.
Unfortunately for him, he had encountered Fang Xiu-a man who was not afraid of seeing Ghosts, but instead feared not seeing them.
To be precise, when Fang Xiu discovered that the Ghosts had disappeared in the dream, what he felt was not fear, but crushing despair.
Fortunately, in an attempt to frighten him, this Ghost had deliberately created all sorts of supernatural incidents, rekindling Fang Xiu's desire to live.
And because the Ghost did not understand silicone, Fang Xiu had seen through his deception.
Of course, the main reason this Ghost had failed was that Fang Xiu simply would not feel afraid.
Fang Xiu walked over to Zhao Hao. Zhao Hao's hands were clamped around his own throat, his face a purplish blue.
He reached out to check for breathing and confirmed that Zhao Hao was indeed dead. He had strangled himself.
That was something a normal human could never accomplish, but the existence of Ghosts was anything but normal.
Suddenly, Fang Xiu took out the Scalpel and plunged it into his own neck. His consciousness gradually blurred, sinking into darkness.
By the emergency exit sign.
"This is the emergency exit!"
"The way out must be here!"
The two coworkers looked at the emergency exit sign with delighted surprise.
Beside them, Zhao Hao was just as delighted.
This time, Fang Xiu did not choose to rest and recover his Spirituality. Since that Ghost's ability was to control dreams, the best approach was to avoid falling asleep.
When they had rested before, everyone had fallen asleep without realizing it. This time, they would skip the rest and leave immediately.
"Let's go!"
Fang Xiu spoke calmly, then took the lead toward the emergency exit. Zhao Hao and the other two followed close behind.
Bang!
The emergency exit door was pushed open, and they filed through.
There was still only darkness, without a trace of light. Once they emerged from it, they found themselves outside Hundred Willows Academy again.
Fang Xiu glanced at the empty street, then at the sky with nothing in it. He immediately took out the Scalpel again and stabbed himself in the neck.
