She had cried enough.
Wang Xiaoliang sniffled, his voice still thick with tears. "Does anything feel wrong right now?"
"My head feels a little foggy." Nuomi's voice was quiet, but she sounded reasonably alert. "My whole body feels weak. No energy. Everything else is okay."
"Anything else?"
"I still want to sleep."
Wang Xiaoliang's heart tightened.
Nuomi chuckled. "Don't worry. Just normal sleepiness. And-I'm really hungry. So hungry my stomach's practically stuck to my spine."
"Then hurry up and eat!"
"Nannan went to get something. It'll be ready soon."
Wang Xiaoliang asked again, "What did it feel like?"
The question came out of nowhere.
But Nuomi understood.
"It was like knowing I was asleep. Dreaming." She paused. "I wanted to wake up, but I couldn't."
"Then how did you wake up?"
There were two seconds of silence on the other end.
"I heard my baby calling me in my dream."
Wang Xiaoliang said nothing.
"Saying they were hungry."
Nuomi's voice softened, completely different from before.
"It must have been my subconscious. I'm pregnant, and my body reacted, so my subconscious pulled me back."
She paused.
"Second Senior Brother, tell me-what if I hadn't been pregnant?"
Wang Xiaoliang's throat tightened.
"Then maybe that subconscious impulse wouldn't have been there. Nobody would have called me. I would have just kept sleeping."
Her tone suddenly changed, taking on a forceful edge. "So tell me, did my baby save me?"
"Yes."
"Pretty amazing, right?"
"Amazing."
"Just a tiny little thing, not even fully formed, and already saving lives." Nuomi laughed, sounding very happy. "Second Senior Brother, my baby's even more amazing than I am."
Wang Xiaoliang laughed too. His nose still stung and his eyes were still red, but he laughed.
"Amazing. Really amazing. Saved Mom and saved themselves too."
Nuomi laughed again.
