"Sure, I'll follow your lead!" Zhou Yi nodded readily. He had great respect for this gentle, elegant auntie-no, older sister.
There was none of the usual official airs, just a soft voice and an approachable manner. Warmth was the defining impression.
"I hear you like tea. I have a tin of Longjing Tea here. Take it home and enjoy it." Vice Mayor Wen took a box of tea from his drawer and handed it to Zhou Yi.
Zhou Yi accepted it gladly.
He knew Vice Mayor Wen did not want him to stand on ceremony. In a situation like this, polite refusals meant distance and reserve, suggesting that he had no desire to grow closer to the other man.
"Mayor, there's something I'd like to report to you..."
Zhou Yi gave a concise account of the "traffic accident" outside the Public Security Bureau.
"What do you have in mind?" Vice Mayor Wen's almond-shaped eyes flashed as he began to guess what Zhou Yi was thinking.
"I'd like the Municipal Public Security Bureau to open a criminal investigation into the allegations in the complaint letter. I'm requesting your approval," Zhou Yi said solemnly.
He had already decided to bypass the County Public Security Bureau and investigate the case directly. To be on the safe side, however, he felt he should first inform Vice Mayor Wen. He was certain the vice mayor would support him.
"Approved!" Vice Mayor Wen nodded without hesitation. Zhou Yi could clearly have made the decision himself, yet he had still taken the initiative to seek his approval. That genuinely pleased and satisfied him.
He gently patted Zhou Yi's arm, once again emphasizing his trust in him. "I told you before-you only need to remember one thing: you have my support."
