After a moment of surprise, Li Linsen flatly refused. "Zheng Yougu, don't try any tricks. Confess your crimes honestly and seek leniency."
It was the same old line. In truth, everyone knew that with five lives on his hands, Zheng Yougu would face the death penalty no matter how much leniency he received.
Zheng Yougu understood that too, of course. He shook his head and insisted, "I want to see your director. Otherwise, I won't say a word."
Li Linsen sneered. "Let me make this clear: it doesn't actually matter whether you talk. We already have evidence of your crimes! This interrogation is simply a procedure we are required by law to carry out."
Zheng Yougu gave a bleak smile and said hoarsely, "I may not have much education, but you can't fool me. There's no way you could have collected enough evidence in such a short time. You still need time to build a case against me."
"I've already heard that your director promised those self-righteous scumbags in the city government he'd solve this case within five days. Isn't that right?"
"Just let me see your director. I swear on my dead daughter's name that I'll answer everything you want to know truthfully!"
Li Linsen hesitated for a few seconds, then stood and left the Interrogation Room.
The prospect of closing the case smoothly was far too tempting. He had to consult the director.
Ten minutes later, Li Linsen returned with a police officer who looked even younger than he did.
Zhou Yi took the lead interrogator's seat. Looking at the middle-aged man before him, whose calm face showed not a trace of viciousness, he frowned slightly.
He couldn't understand why Zheng Yougu had insisted on seeing him.
