Background / History
Military household and the fall of Guazhou
Huo Qilang was born into a military household in Guazhou. After her father and elder brothers died in battle, she adopted a masculine name so she could enlist and draw a soldier’s pay to support the remaining family. Their bones were laid to rest in Lingzhou, where the Hexi Army suffered near-total annihilation defending Tang territory against invading forces 103 111 126.
During Guazhou’s fall, her mother and sisters used their last flour to make scalding gruel as a weapon, dying with the enemy. Huo Qilang’s superior entrusted her with the last surviving warhorse and ordered her to seek reinforcements. She escaped, but every city she reached was already fallen, besieged, or unable to spare troops 132.
After nearly a year of travel, she reached Chang’an and witnessed Princess Dongyi’s bridal procession departing for Tubo to secure peace. Finding no reinforcements, she rejected further pledges of loyalty to rulers or abstract causes. She resolved instead to experience the food, wine, beauty, and scenery her dead family had never enjoyed 132.
Training at the Setting Sun Courtyard
At sixteen, Huo Qilang entered Chen Shigu’s school. Her natural strength made her a candidate for Prajna Repentance, but she chose the Mysterious Qi Primordial Art after seeing the senior disciples practice it. She also chose saber techniques over swordsmanship because they could be learned more quickly 105 132.
She remained the lowest-ranked trained disciple. Losing matches frequently left her responsible for sweeping the courtyard, while life among her ruthless seniors taught her to read expressions, flatter others, and adapt quickly 108 209.
Her facial scar came from Xu Baozhen, who attacked her after she seduced a young male Daoist under his supervision. Her expensive habits eventually drove her to pawn her own saber and seek profitable work through Wei Xun 34 58.
Appearance
- Build: Tall, long-legged, and naturally powerful, with a graceful, dashing bearing 45 105.
- Face: Handsome and masculine-featured, marked by a conspicuous sword scar 34 51.
- Usual clothing: Black martial clothes, sometimes accompanied by a bamboo or broad-brimmed hat. She favors bright colors but formerly avoided them because of their cost and the difficulty of washing out blood 45 103 118.
- Guard uniform: A black robe, red-thread belt patterned with curling vines, and saber at her waist 105.
- Resemblance to Li Yuanying: Their individual facial features differ, but their outlines and builds are remarkably similar. Binding her chest, concealing her scar, and applying makeup allow her to pass as his body double 51 107 108.
Personality
Huo Qilang is sociable, pleasure-seeking, and openly attracted to both men and women. She enjoys music, courtesans, gambling, drinking, and the company of beautiful people. Her nickname, “Silk-and-Gauze Gentleman,” reflects this reputation. She is easygoing about her own shortcomings and rarely dwells on regret 34 64 105.
Money readily changes her attitude toward a job. She angrily objects to being Pang Liangji’s “backup” attendant until a gold ingot makes her cheerfully embrace the description. Nevertheless, she distinguishes paid responsibility from unconditional loyalty: she accepts work without promising lifelong allegiance or seeking military honors 45 114 122 131.
Her irreverence survives threats from powerful people, and she enjoys provoking Wei Xun and Li Yuanying. That confidence can become reckless entitlement: she initiates her sexual relationship with Li Yuanying by force, recognizes that she has violated her obligations, and nevertheless feels no regret 34 112 113 118.
Her rejection of patriotic sacrifice does not prevent attachment to individuals. During the courtyard siege, she refuses to abandon Li Yuanying and accepts the possibility of dying for him—not for his title or dynasty, but for someone she personally cares about 132.
Abilities & Skills
Natural Strength and Saber Combat
Huo Qilang combines exceptional innate strength with Chen Shigu’s brutal saber techniques 105 132.
- Carries a water-filled bathtub that would require several sturdy men to move; she states that she never specifically trained her strength 105.
- Cuts through armor, weapons, and bones with powerful saber strokes 132.
- Uses a heavy Mo Dao effectively, sweeping enemies aside with both its blade and impact 132.
- Her force-heavy fighting rapidly consumes stamina and damages weapons 132.
- Lacks formal swordsmanship. Using saber techniques with the slender Jade Dragon Sword bends and ruins it 132.
Mysterious Qi Primordial Art and Mirage Step
Her chosen internal art supplies the foundation for the school’s lightness method, Mirage Step 35 105.
- Moves across walls and rooftops, overtakes a fleeing spy, and captures him alive 113.
- Knows techniques for concealing her tracks and presence while keeping watch 108.
- Sustains a punishing twenty-day courier journey through martial conditioning 103.
- Uses internal power to keep Li Yuanying alive, at considerable cost to her own fighting ability 135 211.
- Later prioritizes qinggong training to preserve her freedom of movement around the imperial palace 221.
Disguise Art
Huo Qilang can reconstruct faces with cosmetics and false hair, conceal her scar, and impersonate men through clothing and chest binding 51 107 108.
- Produces a convincing version of Li Yuanying’s face using high-quality materials, spending more than two hours on the makeup 108.
- Disguises herself with the features of the Xu brothers when ordered to imitate a household guard 121.
- Recognizes a false beard at a glance and later identifies its wearer as a eunuch previously sent from Chang’an 115 130.
- Requires an estimated month or two of close observation to reproduce a subject’s voice and movements accurately 107.
- Avoids daily makeup unless a commission requires it 121.
Unarmed Techniques and First Aid
She knows the Remnant Lamp Hand, a forceful external martial art that she adapts to massage Li Yuanying’s neck and pressure points 117.
- Dislocates a spy’s arms and chokes him unconscious without drawing her saber 113.
- Can injure armored opponents with punches and elbow strikes, but struggles to kill them immediately when unarmed 132.
- Teaches emergency bleeding control through direct pressure and a constricting cloth tied above the wound. Li Yuanying later uses this knowledge to save her 133.
- Places the unconscious Yuwen Rang on his side to reduce the risk of choking on vomit 117.
Observation and Military Experience
Her military upbringing and frontier service inform her practical judgment 103 116.
- Crosses guarded provincial borders through bribery, bluffing, knowledge of soldier rotations, and nighttime infiltration 103.
- Identifies a group of gamblers as soldiers likely spending a pre-campaign allowance 116.
- Connects dead sparrows and contaminated wastewater to poison in Li Yuanying’s clothing 123.
- Proposes planting a captured spy at Ruan Ziming’s residence to provoke suspicion between him and Liu Kun 113 114.
- Is not infallible: she mistakes Cui Lingrong’s hatred and fear for romantic jealousy until the poisoning plot is exposed 124.
Fortune-Telling, Games, and Drinking
- Bone-reading and physiognomy: Learned from Chen Shigu. She calls her face-reading ordinary but claims greater skill at bone-reading; offers readings to Baozhu and Cui Lingrong 34 35 119.
- Games: Claims skill at the Leaf Game and Pitch-Pot; wins repeatedly at Five Woods during an overnight gambling session 107 116.
- Alcohol tolerance: Drinks more than three times Yuwen Rang’s measure without changing color, then carries him home after he becomes incapacitated 116.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Personal saber: Pawns it to cover debts, leaving her unarmed during the sect gathering and the early bride investigation 58 67.
- Replacement saber: Purchases one in Lingbao before leaving for Youzhou, having its hilt fitted with nonslip cord 74.
- Sharkskin scabbard: Worn with her saber after she receives her household guard uniform 105.
- Horizontal Saber: Her principal weapon during the courtyard siege; breaks after becoming lodged in an enemy’s spine 132.
- Jade Dragon Sword: Thrown to her by Li Yuanying after her saber breaks. Its sharpness helps her hold the doorway, but her misuse ruins the blade 132.
- Song Yinghui’s Mo Dao: A nearly ten-foot weapon that proves better suited to her strength and the sustained siege fighting 132.
- Sleeveless scale armor: Hastily donned during the siege; protects her chest and back but leaves her limbs and lower body exposed 132.
- Disguise supplies: Cosmetics, fur hairs, tweezers, clothing, and headwear used to construct impersonations 108.
- Jade-Bridle Steed: Given to her by Li Yuanying before he departs to contest the succession 211.
Relationships
- Li Yuanying / Prince Shao — Employer, impersonation subject, and intimate partner. Their relationship begins with her sexually assaulting him, later includes reciprocal affection and intimacy, and develops into a personal attachment that leads both to risk their lives for the other. After his accession, she continues secret palace visits involving coercion and restraint; neither seeks a public relationship 112 113 117 123 132 133 221.
- Li Baozhu — Initially regarded as a wealthy patron; hires Huo Qilang to deliver a coded letter and protect her elder brother. Huo Qilang only realizes Baozhu’s royal identity after reaching Youzhou 34 73 104.
- Wei Xun — Eldest senior martial brother. She teases him, recognizes his unusual concern for Baozhu, and repeatedly offers unwanted romantic advice. His overwhelming strength keeps her wary despite their familiar banter 34 35 73 218.
- Chen Shigu — Martial master. Teaches her cultivation, combat, and miscellaneous arts; she remembers his school as a harsh environment rather than an affectionate household 34 35 105 108.
- Xu Baozhen — Second senior martial brother and the source of her facial scar. Disapproves of her pleasures and lack of discipline, but lends her his sword when she has no weapon 34 57 67.
- Pang Liangji — Sixth senior martial brother. Pays her to serve as a wedding attendant and protector 45.
- Cui Lingrong — Li Yuanying’s consort. Huo Qilang initially admires and tries to comfort her, then discovers that the emotions she interpreted as jealousy concealed a poisoning plot 107 119 124.
- Madam Li — Entrusts her with Prince Shao’s overnight protection and largely overlooks their private relationship while prioritizing his health 109 118.
- Yuan Shaobo — Her nominal superior within Prince Shao’s guard; coordinates protection and the evacuation of the wounded 109 133.
- Yuwen Rang — Guard assigned to monitor her outings. Becomes her drinking and gambling companion, but cannot match her endurance 115 116.
- Kang Simo — Initially condemned by her as a deserter. She later learns that his escape was authorized and that his warning brought the reinforcements that saved them 123 133.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Pearl Investigation and Pang Liangji’s Wedding
Huo Qilang enters Baozhu’s room while Wei Xun is missing and voices her belief that he stole the pearl. She later joins the proposed prisoner rescue, comforts Baozhu, and notices Wei Xun’s jealousy when he interrupts her attempted palm reading 20 35.
At Pang Liangji’s wedding, she serves as a paid attendant. When assassins attack, she helps collapse the Blue Tent to protect the newlyweds and smothers the poisonous fog. She subsequently accompanies Baozhu’s investigation into the substituted bride and helps expose clues hidden beneath Xiao Ran’s bed 45 55 62 66.
Courier and Protector in Youzhou
Baozhu recruits her to carry a coded letter north and serve as her brother’s bodyguard. Huo Qilang travels day and night, crosses three heavily guarded military commands, and reaches Youzhou within twenty days. Her report that Baozhu is alive gives the gravely ill Li Yuanying renewed hope 73 103 104.
She becomes his overnight guard and secret body double. Alongside this protective role, she captures a spy, helps manipulate rival officials, and detects poison in his clothes 108 109 113 123.
Courtyard Siege and Survival
When Liu Mian’s Yab soldiers attack, Huo Qilang becomes the defenders’ strongest individual fighter. She holds the southern approach while changing from her broken saber to the Jade Dragon Sword and finally a Mo Dao 132.
She refuses Li Yuanying’s order to escape, recalling her failed search for reinforcements after Guazhou’s fall. A dying soldier tears open her inner thigh, causing catastrophic blood loss, but she continues fighting. Li Yuanying crawls to her and stops the bleeding with a tourniquet; reinforcements arrive before the defenders are overwhelmed 132 133.
Afterward, she expends internal power to sustain Li Yuanying’s life. The resulting decline in her abilities later leaves her unable to detect the expert who secretly eliminates assassins targeting the siblings 135 209 211.
Succession and Secret Palace Visits
Huo Qilang remains beside Li Yuanying through his reunion with Baozhu. When he leaves for Chang’an to contest the succession, he assigns her to impersonate him as governor of Youzhou and gives her the Jade-Bridle Steed 204 206 211.
In the extra chapter, she visits the imperial palace every few months. Her desire to retain unrestricted movement motivates her to overcome her usual indolence and improve her school’s qinggong 221.
