Ren Xiaoyi challenged He Xing of the Mountain Foothill Gym first, which benefited Su Bai as well. Watching their battle would let him better assess both sides' strength.
After the referee announced the rules, the Gym Leader sent out his Pokémon first.

He Xing's Pokémon was Magmar, but Su Bai felt there was something unusual about this one.
Ren Xiaoyi listlessly raised her Pokémon Ball to her chest. It opened, and a Dreepy appeared on the battlefield.
"Dreepy, would you fight for me?"
Wow, such a rare Pokémon. Was this what being the Ghost-type Elite Four member's great-granddaughter got you?
He Xing grew a little more serious as well.
Dreepy only evolved into Drakloak at level 50, so he couldn't underestimate this one just because it was still in its early evolutionary stage.
This could very well be a level 49 "baby."
"Magmar, Fire Punch!"
"Would you use Sucker Punch?"
Ren Xiaoyi's voice remained mild, soft, and sweet, but Dreepy's Sucker Punch was anything but weak.
Since Magmar's Fire Punch was an attacking move, Dreepy's Sucker Punch struck first.
"Flamethrower."
"Please use Substitute."
Dreepy's Substitute blocked the Flamethrower outright.
"Next, please use Disable."
Dreepy narrowed its eyes, an eerie blue light shining in its sly gaze. Magmar shuddered, unable to unleash Flamethrower.
"Dreepy, could you use Confuse Ray for me?"
Dreepy released another strange glow, which circled Magmar and flickered. Magmar fell into confusion.
"Magmar, snap out of it."
"Dreepy, I think we should use Dragon Tail."
Dreepy nodded. Its blue tail suddenly lengthened and lashed straight at Magmar's head.
Magmar was sent flying, its head swaying several times, utterly dazed by the blow.
Seeing how super effective Dreepy's Dragon Tail was, Su Bai thought his suspicions had been right.
