Shawn stepped into the corridor without hurrying Harry, giving him more time with Sirius.
With nothing else to do, he began inspecting the High-Security Inmate Block.
Earlier, his attention had been entirely on Sirius. Now that he was outside, he noticed something strange about the place.
It was too quiet.
Before coming here, he had read up on Azkaban.
He knew that even with Dementors around, these prisoners were usually raving and making a racket.
Shawn made a circuit of the block. He did not recognize most of these diehard Death Eaters to begin with.
Now they were all curled up, their faces hidden. He recognized only a handful whose files he had read.
In the end, he went to inspect the cell opposite Sirius's first. The man curled up inside looked familiar.
It was Theodore's father, Old Nott. He also looked healthier than any of the other high-security inmates.
Shawn put that down to his recent arrival and thought little of it. The only particularly miserable thing about him was his exposed thigh, swollen red and purple.
Shawn wondered whether Azkaban provided its prisoners with medical care.
The punishment here was primarily psychological, not physical.
His suspicions immediately rose. He sliced through the lock with a spell, kicked the cell door open, and walked inside.
Old Nott still did not open his eyes, but his quickened breathing betrayed his anxiety.
Shawn extended his Legilimency, yet detected no unusual emotions or thoughts.
After a moment's consideration, he used his wand to examine Old Nott's swollen thigh from a distance. There was nothing unusual inside it either, just the normal effects of an untreated injury from a fall.
Shawn raised an eyebrow. For Theodore's sake, he took some healing potions and food from his ring and set them on the floor.
