Whoosh!
Bessa's attempt to recruit Shawn in the midst of battle took everyone by surprise.
Hermione stroked her silky hair, her face full of confusion.
"Huh? At a time like this, why are those evil people from the Double Serpent Society still naïve enough to think they can make peace with the Chief?"
A young wizard beside her smirked smugly. "Haha, the Chief's overwhelming presence must have stunned them senseless."
Another young wizard gave a sidelong look and nodded in agreement. "If the Double Serpent Society gets down on their knees and begs for mercy, we could consider it, couldn't we?"
A fiery little witch snapped, "You useless loudmouth! Since when do you get to make decisions for the Chief?"
"..."
The spectators were not the only ones surprised. Even the five Double Serpent Society Elders outside the arena were rather taken aback.
Hephis, the Fire Legendary, said discontentedly, "What is Lord Bessa playing at? Is he still trying to make peace?"
Poseidon, the Water Legendary, smoothed things over. "He must be lulling his opponent into a false sense of security before killing him in one strike."
Awen, who had been playing the peacemaker all along, frowned deeply. His lips parted, but he said nothing more.
Edward glanced at the equally silent Il and simply gave an order.
"This is no time for doubts. I don't think Shawn will accept. Stay focused and be ready to strike at any moment."
Just as he had said, Shawn only paused briefly in the arena before shaking his head in refusal.
"Our ideals differ. There's no point saying anything else. Come on!"
Even as Shawn refused, his hands kept moving. His five slender fingers swept past his waist, and a shimmering, multicolored Crescent Thunder Harp appeared in the crook of his arm.
