Background / History

Childhood and Hogwarts

Tom grew up in an orphanage, where he concealed his longing for affection behind contempt and anger. He envied a girl who was adopted and tried to win other children’s friendship by revealing that he could command snakes. They fled in terror, leaving him to conclude that only snakes would stay with him 119.

Dumbledore introduced him to the wizarding world but burned the contents of his wardrobe while confronting him over theft. Tom outwardly apologized while suppressing his disappointment. At Hogwarts, he later overheard Dumbledore opposing Slughorn’s wish to take him as a godson and criticizing his access to the Restricted Section 119.

After obtaining Salazar Slytherin’s legacy in the Chamber of Secrets, Tom vowed to surpass Dumbledore. He created the Diary Horcrux following Moaning Myrtle’s death. In another memory, he killed servants at Riddle House and then murdered his father after Tom Riddle Sr. refused to apologize for insulting Merope. Tom subsequently broke down in the rain, questioning why he did not deserve love and resolving to make the world fear him 119.

The Diary Fragment

The Tom encountered by Shawn is the youthful soul and memories split off into the diary, not Voldemort’s main soul. Shawn regards this earlier fragment as more emotionally recoverable than the later Voldemort 115.

Tom initially refuses to communicate. When threatened with Fiendfyre, he presents himself as a harmless memory, but Shawn identifies him as a Horcrux. Tom also exposes Shawn’s failed impersonation of Theodore Nott through his knowledge of the Nott family and his use of Legilimency 113 114.

Shawn eventually undermines Tom’s confidence by demonstrating greater power and influence, then uses a Hallucinogen potion and Legilimency to enter his memories. At the memory of Tom’s breakdown after killing his father, Shawn casts Soul Lock 118 119.

Appearance

Tom’s alchemical body recreates his handsome youthful appearance rather than Voldemort’s later serpentine features 120 125.

  • Build: Tall and lean; stands a head taller than Shawn during their hillside meeting 121 125.
  • Hair and eyes: Black, matching his original appearance despite the body’s maternal bloodline materials 125.
  • Complexion: Pale, with a soft glow beneath the skin of his newly created body 120.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears silver robes patterned with stars 120 123 327.
  • Snake God form: Becomes the central head of the restored three-headed serpent 532.
  • Later humanoid manifestation: Appears in silver robes with a red serpent phantom behind his head and travels as black-green mist 540.

Personality

Tom is proud, observant, and intensely competitive. He detects inconsistencies in Shawn’s disguise, recognizes attempts to provoke him, and initially refuses submission even under threat of destruction. Challenges to his magical talent—and comparisons with Dumbledore—are particularly effective at upsetting him 114 118.

His coldness conceals a persistent need for affection. His childhood memories show rejected attempts at friendship, disappointment in potential parental figures, and grief over his mother. Shawn’s concern for his safety and return of Slytherin’s Locket gradually soften his responses 119 125 135.

He remains ruthless toward enemies while valuing capable, loyal allies. He admires Theodore’s resolve, warns him about the risks of relying exclusively on the Killing Curse, and retaliates when Aurors threaten him. By his demigod stage, Tom has abandoned his former political ambitions in favor of helping Shawn and preparing for godhood 258 311 536 541.

Abilities & Skills

Water Magic and Serpentine Chains

Tom specializes in water-based spells and curses, sharing many techniques with Voldemort 308.

  • Uses layered circular walls incorporating mist, moisture, weeds, and soil to withstand coordinated Killing Curses 182.
  • Later attempts to bind the Death Archway with green Serpentine Chains 542.

Killing Curse and Spell Reversal

Tom possesses exceptional mastery of Avada Kedavra; during his duel with Theodore, the narration identifies Voldemort as probably the only contemporary wizard who surpasses him in its use 131.

  • Casts a Killing Curse from his fingertip immediately after re-embodiment 120.
  • Blocks Theodore’s opening curse with a Necromantic Shield 131.
  • Uses Spell Reversal to deflect a second curse after insulating his wand with magical energy 131.

  • His dramatic display before the Death Eaters does not exceed level six and leaves his hand faintly trembling 124.

Curses and Soul Research

Tom uses his knowledge of Voldemort’s body and soul experiments to develop attacks against the main soul 310.

  • Creates a curse by sacrificing part of his own soul; it initially traps Voldemort’s soul fragment but ultimately fails 310.
  • Continues researching an anti-Voldemort curse afterward 327.
  • Uses the Cruciatus Curse against Rola during the confrontation outside the Albanian temple 312.
  • Cannot initially remove the curse from the Horcrux ring 135.
  • Employs curses that Herpo recognizes as protection against his Heart-Devouring Curse 533.

Fiendfyre

Tom shapes Fiendfyre into large serpentine attackers 183.

  • Deploys four Fiendfyre pythons against four coordinated squads 183.
  • Burns the remaining rear guards to ash after other attackers escape 183.

Mental Magic and Investigation

Tom combines Legilimency, memory manipulation, and strong analytical judgment 114 258 327.

  • Detects Shawn’s unusually consistent surface thoughts and infers that he is an Occlumency master 114.
  • Extracts a silver memory thread to show Shawn the research facility beneath the Greek Ministry of Magic 327.
  • Connects scattered Albanian clues to a possible treasure or resurrection mechanism left by Herpo the Foul 258.
  • Interrogates captured Pure-blood Association elders and compiles their identities, backgrounds, and associates 139.

Parseltongue and Mobility

Tom’s command of snakes is evident from childhood, while his later combat style incorporates Apparition and mist-based flight 119 152.

  • Speaks to and commands snakes 119.
  • Travels through the Albanian Forest on black mist and teaches Theodore the Flying Charm 152 258.
  • Finds that Parseltongue does not work on the mutated red serpent associated with the temple 327.

Demigod Powers

Fusion with the Snake God gives Tom immense physical and magical power, along with the serpent’s memories 532 536 545.

  • Overwhelms Loki with the Snake God’s concentrated rainbow energy and constricts him beneath the sea 532.
  • Uses enormous spatial ripples to teleport groups away from danger 540 541.
  • Drains Il and the remaining Society elites of magical energy, then transports them to a deserted island 542.
  • Becomes strong enough to sever Shawn’s Soul Shackles himself, but deliberately leaves them intact 536.
  • Remains vulnerable to Death’s appeal through an image and voice of his mother, despite warnings from the other Snake God soul 542.

  • Silver Star-Patterned Robe — His recurring clothing after re-embodiment 120 123 327.

  • Voldemort — The main soul from which Tom originated and his principal personal enemy. Voldemort ultimately agrees to sever their connection completely beneath Gringotts 308 310 423 424.

  • His youthful face does not indicate his soul’s age: the Albanian excavation narrative notes that his soul is older than those of most wizards present 307.
  • Shawn deliberately preserves his original black hair and eyes; the maternal materials used for the puppet body would otherwise have produced brown hair and eyes 125.
