Background / History

Liu Chuang is one of Liu Yuanzhou's closest village friends. He regularly joins Yuanzhou and Zhang He for market trips, household work, and social gatherings, including helping prepare Liu Yuanbo's wedding banquet 5 7 16 17.

His impulsiveness brings the group into conflict with Fatty Wang. Believing Fatty Wang was harassing a woman, Liu Chuang confronts and pushes him; Fatty Wang's followers restrain and beat Liu Chuang, Zhang He, and Li Mingzhong, while the Wang family's martial master severely injures Liu Yuanzhou. Liu Chuang is distraught that his actions led to Yuanzhou's injury, but privately resolves not to fear the Wang family 8.

He remains eager to investigate unusual events around the village. After Li Laocai's ritual, he follows the Taoist priest and Li's family to the Thousand Buddha Cave, hoping both to uncover their purpose and possibly learn the Taoist's swordsmanship 23 24.

Liu Chuang is deeply hurt when Li Mingzhong, after passing the County Exam, refuses to acknowledge him and Zhang He. His anger later turns toward Fatty Wang; after reconciling with Yuanzhou and Zhang He, he helps them scout, abduct, and beat Fatty Wang as part of their revenge plan 31 34 35 36.

As Liu Yuanzhou prepares to leave for Yan Province City, Liu Chuang becomes noticeably unsettled, drinking heavily and showing envy toward Yuanzhou's opportunities 39. He is later abducted by men invoking the Fatty Wang incident, then imprisoned and tortured alongside Zhang He into confessing to a murder they did not commit 56 58. After his release, he becomes withdrawn and less cheerful, and tells Yuanzhou that he intends to find work in the city once recovered 65.

Personality

Liu Chuang is forthright, emotional, and fiercely protective of people he believes are being wronged. He acts before considering the consequences, as shown by his confrontation with Fatty Wang and his reckless pursuit of the Thousand Buddha Cave mystery 8 24.

He is highly loyal to Liu Yuanzhou and Zhang He, but his pride makes humiliation difficult for him to bear. Li Mingzhong's rejection leaves him dejected, while the Wang family's bullying fuels his desire for revenge 31 34. Although he initially appears bold, encounters with violence and imprisonment expose a more vulnerable side; after being tortured, he becomes quiet, introspective, and prone to staring into space 38 65.

Relationships

• Liu Yuanzhou — Closest friend and sworn-brother-like companion. Yuanzhou repeatedly supports him, helps with his family chores, and shares responsibility for the consequences of their revenge against Fatty Wang 20 21 33 65.
• Zhang He — Village friend and fellow participant in the conflict with Fatty Wang. They are beaten together, later reconcile after resentment between them, and are imprisoned together 8 34 58.
• Liu Dalong — Father. Liu Chuang works alongside him at the family's cattle pen, chopping grass for livestock 21.
• Xiao Hua — Younger sister. She asks Liu Yuanzhou to help carry water and later seeks Yuanzhou's aid when their father disciplines Liu Chuang 21 33.
