"Uh... this letter..."
Leonard pinched the sheet of paper between his fingers and raised his eyebrows, overcome by an inexplicable sense of absurdity.
"Is this a prank?"
He could not help grumbling, "No matter how you look at it, this seems like some pointless trick dreamed up by a bored little thug in the East Borough, or a drunk who couldn't afford his booze, doesn't it?"
"You could think of it that way."
"Although the contents look ridiculous, this letter has already caused a considerable disturbance in Backlund. So we have to get things under control before it causes something worse." Soest then briefly told Leonard about the rumors of East Borough gang members dying unnatural deaths one after another because of this letter.
"That sounds more like a typical case of mass panic caused by a prank, doesn't it?" Leonard rubbed his chin as he listened and analyzed the situation.
"Those gang leaders commit all sorts of crimes and have plenty of enemies to begin with. Even without this letter, they're far more likely than ordinary people to be killed in a feud."
"So, as long as enough copies of this letter are sent out, a few unlucky gangsters are bound to happen to die. Then the rest will scare themselves to death.
"Are the higher-ups taking this so seriously because the letter failed to pick its targets and frightened some important noble in the West Borough or Empress Borough?"
"Clever of you." Soest snorted. "Just two days ago, someone slipped dozens of these letters into the mailbox at Earl Hall's estate without anyone noticing. You understand what that means, don't you?"
"They avoided the Hall Family's Beyonder bodyguards and delivered the letters without being detected. Was it some kind of invisibility ability like an Assassin's or a Wraith's?"
