Power Progression
The documented changes concern the Canvas’s condition and Neph’s access to it, rather than a cultivation rank of its own.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initially blank | 1 2 | Radiates cold and allows travel into the Pure White Space through spirituality. Neph can reshape her surroundings using memories. |
| Marked by the True Creator | 4 | The True Creator’s attention produces ink. Neph concentrates it into a dot; after the Canvas fades it to a pale mark, Moon City patrol members can perceive her. |
| Deepened ink mark | 29 | The dot becomes darker, with a faint red tint. Following an overwhelming response from the True Creator, Neph deciphers ritual instructions and a symbolic emblem. |
| Prayer reception and altered protection | 41 | Responds to the God of Winter’s honorific name, reveals a record of Neph, and allows her to distinguish prayers within the Pure White Space. Neph suspects her former immunity to mystical powers has ended. |
| Mental-plane manifestation | 50 | After becoming a Faded Painter, Neph discovers the Canvas counts as part of “herself.” Fading its presence makes an expanse of pure white appear beneath her mind island, with a white door serving as a point of contact. |
Appearance
The Blank Canvas is rectangular, approximately the size of an A4 sheet. Its surface feels like canvas but is unusually rigid; Neph suspects it may be frozen 6.
- Surface: Pure white, initially without writing or images 2 6.
- Temperature: Persistently cold to the touch, with occasional surges strong enough to make Neph shudder or release it 4 23.
- Ink mark: A single dot left through contact with the True Creator, later darkening and acquiring a reddish tint 4 29.
- Variable size: Enlarges and unfurls around Neph when she first tests the God of Winter’s honorific name 41.
Background / History
Cheng Jianxue finds the Canvas beside her after obtaining the Sequence 9 potion and awakening near the frozen fog barrier in the Forsaken Land of the Gods. Initially unsure whether it is a Uniqueness or a Sefirah, she provisionally treats it as the latter. Her experiments establish that it connects to the snowy world where she first awoke 1 2.
In Moon City, Neph realizes that the Canvas acts as a key, operating manual, and doorway to that world—not proof that she owns it. She compares herself to a thief who took a key while its owner was absent. The space’s resemblance to a collection hall also makes her wonder whether she was once one of its collected objects 8.
Testing an honorific name later reveals an ice sculpture of Neph and a record identifying her as Cheng Jianxue, a human who appeared after a sacrificial ritual. She concludes that she originally arrived in an Outer Deity’s divine kingdom. When Amon examines the Canvas, he identifies it as an unfamiliar Sefirah; Neph tells him that its Great Old One owner learned everything from her, rather than supplying her knowledge 41 47.
Abilities & Functions
Gateway to the Pure White Space
Extending spirituality into the Canvas transports Neph into the Pure White Space. Repeating the action returns her to the real world 2.
- Entering and leaving consumes spirituality; simply remaining inside does not appear to do so 2.
- Neph carries objects into the space, including a chair, a wooden bucket, and the Lucky Coin 9 35.
- Early travel makes her disappear from the physical room together with the Canvas 8 38.
- The space initially remains dangerously cold even when she recreates a bedroom, thick clothing, and bedding. After advancing through the Winter Envoy potion, she can tolerate a prolonged stay 2 48.
- Access requires usable spirituality: Amon prevents her escape by restraining it 47.
Searchable Archive
The Canvas displays written information in response to Neph’s queries. Some entries can be opened like hyperlinks, revealing further descriptions and images 8.
- Potion records: Include names, formulas, potion appearances, and Beyonder characteristic descriptions 8.
- Ingredient records: Include images, names, origins, and preserved memories 8.
- Pathway research: Lets Neph identify the Faded Painter’s unusual Spirit Vision and confirm the Pure White Walker’s corruption-removing ability 9 18.
- Restricted information: Neph cannot view ability descriptions from Sequence 2 onward. She cannot determine whether the records are absent or inaccessible 40.
- Ashen Ledger: The pathway’s Uniqueness has a searchable entry and is somewhere within the space, but Neph cannot bring it out 40.
Memory Reconstruction and Retrieval
Through the Canvas, Neph can reshape the Pure White Space according to remembered scenes and retrieve contents preserved within it 2 8.
- Recreates her bedroom from memory, though its apparent comforts cannot remove the space’s cold 2.
- Produces remembered food with convincing taste and texture but no real nourishment; large-scale production rapidly drains spirituality 2 3.
- Provides actual edible plant specimens, allowing Neph to obtain her first meal in the Forsaken Land of the Gods 5.
- Draws a frost-passing flower out of its image. Touching it reveals its life from seed to blossom; pressing it against the Canvas returns it to an image 8.
- Gives access to stored potions and Beyonder characteristics. Neph retrieves the Dirge Poet potion while escaping Amon 9 35 48.
Concealment and Protection
The Canvas makes both itself and its bearer difficult to perceive. Before the True Creator leaves an ink mark, Moon City explorers cannot see or hear Neph even at close range, although they react to stones and physical contact 3 4.
- Ordinary people and Middle-Low Sequence Beyonders struggle to notice Neph unless they know approximately where she is and deliberately search 15.
- Its concealment is less effective against High Sequence Beyonders 15.
- Most children overlook the Canvas, and it disappears entirely within a Sealed Artifact’s investigative field of vision 14.
- Neph initially reports isolation more thorough than Sefirah Castle’s: she senses the True Creator’s aura without hearing His ravings 20.
- Its protection later becomes incomplete. Amon overwhelms Neph, restrains her spirituality, and physically takes the Canvas 47.
- Neph’s mystical connection to it cannot be severed merely by removing it from her hands 25.
Purification Within the Space
Objects brought into the Pure White Space are engulfed by white in Neph’s special Spirit Vision, which consumes their other colors. She observes this cleansing even on food carrying a faint aura from Sefirah Castle 23.
- Neph uses the space to check herself for possible Worm of Time parasitization, trusting its screening of corruption 23 25.
- Its defensive cold can become dangerous to her as well. After recovering from corruption, she suspects she might have become an ice sculpture had she not awakened 29.
- The space preserves a Sequence 3 Pure White Walker characteristic until Neph places it inside a wooden bucket. Its fusion with the bucket produces A Bucket of White Paint, a separate Sealed Artifact capable of erasing traces and corruption 35 36.
Divine Messages and Prayers
The Canvas reacts to divine attention and serves as a medium through which Neph receives information and prayers 4 29 41.
- The True Creator’s response manifests as ink; later contact yields decipherable rituals and an emblem of two inverted crosses separated by a rose 4 29.
- A good-fortune ritual makes the black ink spread and shimmer with silver 35.
- Prayers addressed to the God of Winter become intelligible when Neph probes with her spirituality inside the Pure White Space 41.
- During Moon City’s public ceremony, repeated recitation of the honorific name makes the Canvas stir and release a chill 46.

- True Creator — Leaves the ink mark that allows others to perceive Neph and later communicates ritual knowledge through the Canvas 4 29.
