Background / History

Transmigration and life on alternate Earth

Lin Chuan arrived in the new world as a university freshman. Hearing his roommate’s name, Zhou Mingrui, made him suspect that he had entered Lord of the Mysteries. The names of his other roommates—Lucien and Meng Qi—deepened his alarm, but the world’s absurd alternate history convinced him that he was living on a comedy-like parallel Earth 2 3.

He spent four years with his roommates and became a web novelist. After graduation, he moved to Zhou Mingrui’s hometown and largely withdrew from social life. His isolation was deliberate: he feared that forming a new family and making too many attachments would cause him to forget his original parents and identity 2 3.

Five years after transmigrating, a visit to the place where his childhood home should have stood confirmed that his family had no place in this reality. He bought a buffet meal for three, set out food for his absent parents, and broke down while speaking to them. After spending the night at a crossroads, he resolved to stay alive until he could return home 5 6.

Discovering his nature

After learning that Zhou Mingrui had died suddenly on April 1, Lin Chuan found the Qin-Han Secret Record of Esoteric Arts in his room. Its Luck Enhancement Ritual confirmed that this strange Earth was the bygone Earth of Lord of the Mysteries, rather than an unrelated parallel world 8 9.

Lin Chuan had originally planned to hide in Sefirah Castle until the future. His friendship with Zhou Mingrui changed that decision: he could no longer treat him merely as a fictional protagonist expected to bear the apocalypse alone 10.

An improvised ritual brought Lin Chuan into absolute nothingness, where he found his pre-transmigration body. He discovered that his arrival from outside the universe had given substance to the symbol of “beyond the Oldest One,” transforming his body into an ancient Sefirah. Its dominant power, however, remained nothingness, making unrestricted ascension self-destructive 11 12 13.

Rescue and departure from Earth

With the Oldest One’s awakening approaching, Lin Chuan planned to leave Earth and later pursue the Hermit and Paragon pathways. His intended solution to his unstable power was to devour the Knowledge Moor, gaining the analysis and knowledge he lacked while expanding his symbolism of being beyond the Oldest One 15 16.

Before leaving, he visited Zhou Mingrui’s family and Huang Tao’s parents, distributing jade charms. He then used the charms to draw both friends’ parents into his own Sefirah as Light Cocoons, erasing their remaining records and traces on Earth 16 17 19.

He also placed a separated incarnation inside Sefirah Castle as a contingency. On May 5, 2018, his main body left Earth and began traveling through the stars, intending to wait for Klein’s awakening 19.

Reunion in the Fifth Epoch

Lin Chuan appeared at the first Tarot Club gathering and greeted Zhou Mingrui with “Long time no see.” Speaking Chinese helped Zhou Mingrui recognize him. He adopted the code name Temperance, explained potion safety, and taught Audrey and Alger the acting method 22 23 25 26 29.

The incarnation in Sefirah Castle had severed its connection with the main body before the Oldest One’s awakening and sealed its consciousness. Its memories therefore stopped roughly half a year after the evacuation from Earth; it did not remember the subsequent ten thousand years in the Starry Sky 29.

After leaving Sefirah Castle, Lin Chuan entered Tingen as a spirit and renewed his friendship with Klein. He promised that Klein could return home, but withheld dangerous knowledge until Klein could reach at least Sequence Two. When he considered taking Klein’s burdens upon himself, Klein refused to leave him behind, prompting Lin Chuan to acknowledge the arrogance of deciding everything alone 31 33 34 37.

Old Neil and Life Alchemy

Seeking a physical body, Lin Chuan investigated Old Neil’s connection to the Hidden Sage. When he confronted the entity behind Old Neil’s ritual knowledge, the Hidden Sage fled through the Spirit World. Old Neil’s corruption cleared and his spirituality stabilized 40 41 46.

Lin Chuan initially explained that Shaliste’s dissipated spirit body could not be restored even by a true god. He then apologized for testing Old Neil’s suffering and promised to save her without demanding payment, explaining that beings erased from existence belonged to his divine kingdom. He suspected her disappearance was connected to leakage from his Sefirah in the Western Continent; the supplied chapters do not show her restoration 48 49.

Old Neil subsequently performed the Life Alchemy ritual that gave Lin Chuan a new human body. Lin Chuan disguised the ritual using intercepted Hidden Sage corruption and borrowed information-related abilities rather than possessing Life Alchemy authority himself 50.

Appearance

• Early Earth appearance: Black hair, black eyes, handsome features, and ear-length, unstyled hair that gave him a languid air 2.
• Restored original appearance: After reconnecting with his Sefirah, he reverted to a thin-faced young man wearing black-framed glasses, with persistent weariness in his eyes 16.
• True body in the void: His pre-transmigration body appeared motionless and undecayed, wearing black trousers and a white shirt 12.
• Tingen spirit form: Translucent and capable of floating, dressed in a warlock’s robe 33 38.
• Life Alchemy body: A young man with black hair and eyes, gentle features, shallow eye sockets, and an elven appearance. He recreated a predominantly black warlock’s robe and soft pointed hat 50.

Personality

Lin Chuan is mischievous and enjoys provoking reactions. He teases his readers over short updates, writes his friends into novels, and initially answers Audrey’s question about becoming a Beyonder with the impractical suggestion that she simply find the Blasphemy Slate 2 3 23 24.

His central attachment is home. He regards his memories, values, emotions, and desire to reunite with his parents as more important than whether he remains biologically human. Even after discovering his extraordinary nature, he fears gradual change over centuries more than external possession or corruption 3 11 14 31.

His compassion is personal rather than indiscriminate. Friendship makes him unwilling to abandon Zhou Mingrui to a tragic fate, but he explicitly rejects the idea that he must become everyone’s savior. He also refuses to turn the Tarot Club into dependents who rely on him for every answer 10 19 29.

He values caution and independent judgment. He warns Klein not to trust even him completely, withholds knowledge Klein cannot safely bear, and eventually accepts that protecting a friend does not mean denying that friend a choice 34 36 37.

Sentient Sefirah and Nothingness

• Intrinsic connection: His Sefirah is his true body, not merely an external domain he controls. Before separation by Earth’s barrier, returning his consciousness to it required no ritual 16 35.
