Background / History
Transmigration and awakening
Qi Yuanzuo was a second-generation heir in his previous modern life. System 88 brought him into A Beauty in Troubled Times before birth and sealed his modern memories to prevent his infant brain from being overwhelmed. He consequently spent his early childhood growing up like an ordinary child, with those memories beginning to awaken shortly before the opening events 1 3.
His mother, the empress, died giving birth to him. The Qi Emperor subsequently kept him close and raised him personally. Although Qi Yuanzuo never met his mother, he sincerely cherishes her for giving him his second life 1 12.
Alarmed by the novel’s account of his future siblings, he initially planned to castrate his father to prevent further births. His arrival at the front hall instead coincided with Qi Mingyue’s rebellion, during which he shielded the emperor from an arrow. The wound pierced his chest and left him unconscious for six days 1.
The original crown prince’s life
The crown prince remembered from the novel and the reborn princes’ previous lives was accomplished in both scholarship and warfare. These are retrospective achievements, not abilities already regained by the three-year-old Qi Yuanzuo 9 11 16.
| Period | Recorded achievement or event |
|---|---|
| Age three | Could read 11. |
| Age five | Mastered the classics 11. |
| Age six | Defeated his teacher in debate 11. |
| Age thirteen | Shot a bear at the hunting grounds and took the highest honors 11. |
| Age twenty | Went to war and extended the borders by fifty li 11. |
| Military career | Humbled the Xiongnu with three arrows, tore up a marriage-alliance agreement, and escorted the princess intended for that marriage home. His spear was called Realm, and the street of his celebrated return became Young Dragon Avenue 9. |
| Succession struggle | Was deposed and reinstated three times; eventually seized the throne through rebellion 1 8. |
| Downfall | Was betrayed by trusted subordinates, including Bolao. Qi Chengyou remembers rebels entering through palace gates opened using a forged imperial decree 1 20. |
| Death | Suffered death by a thousand cuts; his bones were ground down and his ashes scattered 1 4. |
Public accounts condemned the original crown prince for killing his teacher, defying his grandmother, killing relatives, and causing his father’s death. Qi Yuanzuo’s recovered knowledge supplies a different context: an abusive teacher, a manipulative grandmother, an increasingly controlling father, and relatives involved in betrayal and treason 1.
He later questions whether the novel itself offers a reliable account. Jiang Liang’s actual family circumstances do not match its sympathetic description of the female lead, leading him to suspect that the supposed omniscient narrative concealed her perspective and omitted crucial facts 29.
Appearance
Qi Yuanzuo resembles his mother, with fair skin, a round head, a round face, and rosy cheeks. His father’s attentive care has made him notably plump 3.
- Eyes: Round and expressive, contributing to the innocent appearance he uses when coaxing adults 16 34.
- Lips: Naturally vermilion; their underlying thin, sharp shape resembles the Empress Dowager’s and is shared by his father and Princess Baozhu 20.
- Hair: Usually gathered into a small topknot by Simiao; loose hair sticks out untidily around bedtime 13 34.
- Chest wound: Develops a thick scab and a residual burn scar during recovery 7.
- Identifying accessory: Wears the emperor’s blood-jade bead bracelet at his waist because it is too large for his wrist 25 41.
Personality
Qi Yuanzuo combines an adult’s judgment with a young child’s affectionate manner. He deliberately uses praise, gifts, helplessness, and physical affection to secure support—most notably when persuading Qi Chengyou to protect him rather than compete for the throne. He is candid with 88 about these tactics 8.
His affection is not entirely an act. He deeply misses his mother, becomes genuinely attached to his father’s care, and promises to protect the emperor after recognizing the wounds left by his childhood. At the same time, he resists being treated as incapable and worries that both his father and eldest brother might try to control him 12 20 22 34 48.
He refuses to execute dangerous people merely because they betrayed him in the original story. He wants Jiang Liang’s crop seeds to benefit the country and keeps Bolao both as a potentially useful covert agent and to observe what choices he makes under different circumstances 43.
His restraint does not prevent intimidation or violence. He slaps Lady Zhou while rescuing the Third Prince, physically punishes Bolao, and threatens Zhaoyi Wei and her servants with execution before releasing them. His explanation afterward distinguishes condemning someone’s actions from wanting that person dead 31 35 50.
Knowledge of his possible fate also leaves him vulnerable to fear. After questioning the novel’s reliability, he suffers a panic episode and resolves to improve his health and learn martial arts rather than entrust his survival entirely to others 29.
Abilities & Skills
Exceptional memory and textual comprehension
Qi Yuanzuo can retain what he hears and sees, connect spoken passages with written characters, and retrieve precise portions of a text 11 41.
- Answers questions about numbered sentences and individual characters in the Thousand Character Classic without hesitation 11.
- Recognizes a question drawn from the Analects rather than the text being tested 11.
- Recites and understands the Thousand Character Classic, Hundred Family Surnames, and Three Character Classic during Zhang Yao’s examination 41.
- Has handwriting far below the level of his textual knowledge; Zhang Yao must begin by teaching him how to hold a brush 41.
Political and psychological judgment
He interprets court maneuvering and personal motives through both his recovered knowledge and observation 11 37 46.
- Identifies the Yin family’s attempt to hedge its political future by sending another daughter into the palace 11.
- Advises Qi Chengyou to turn accusations back on a manipulative opponent rather than become trapped in self-defense 16.
- Deduces that Jiang Liang’s system rewards her for gaining other people’s affection 43.
- Connects the emperor’s need for control to childhood deprivation and his desire to protect his son as he himself wished to be protected 46.
- Uses displays of weakness to win Qi Chengyou’s support while retaining his own freedom of decision 8 20.
Imperial authority and household management
The emperor explicitly teaches him to command servants and punish those who overstep their position. Qi Yuanzuo increasingly applies that authority independently 6.
- Exposes Wet Nurse Zhang’s manipulation by bringing his hunger and treatment directly to his father’s attention 6.
- Demands that Bolao respect physical boundaries and forbids him from taking unauthorized action 18 35 36.
- Sends Simiao to investigate Lady Zhou’s scheme and report the poisoning attempt 33 36.
- Forces Zhaoyi Wei to admit that she used his visit to seek imperial favor 50.
System 88 and recovered knowledge
System 88 communicates with him mentally and supplies information about the novel and reborn characters. It also warns him when Qi Chengyou prepares to test him with a punch 3 16.
- Available support: Information, conversation, danger warnings, and entertainment played inside his head 1 3 16.
- Unavailable powers: The displayed immortal arts are only a simulation; 88’s data has been wiped, leaving it unable to grant those abilities 3.
- Knowledge limit: Qi Yuanzuo has no stored expertise sufficient to advance agriculture or technology himself 13.
- Prediction limit: The altered worldline and the novel’s omissions make remembered events an uncertain guide 3 29.
Health and Limitations
- Arrow injury: Damaged his chest and internal organs. The initial prescription requires three months of quiet rest and six months of observation 1.
- Restricted exertion: Running or jumping too vigorously causes chest pain; even a walk of less than two hundred meters leaves him panting during recovery 8 13.
- Martial prospects: Physicians regard his path to martial training as effectively closed. He nevertheless hopes to become healthy enough to train by age six 1 9 13.
- Continuing treatment: Takes bitter medicine in recurring courses; physicians propose portable pills to relieve future attacks triggered by fright or strenuous activity 13 22.
- Poison vulnerability: Oleander pollen could cause fatal throat swelling because of his weakened heart and lungs 36.
- Current combat ability: Does not display the automatic defensive instincts Qi Chengyou remembers from the original adult crown prince 16.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Blood-jade bead bracelet / Blood-Red Bead Strand — Twenty warm blood-jade beads, each eight millimeters across, originally carried by the emperor. The emperor offers one unconditional request per bead, but Qi Yuanzuo instead accepts the entire bracelet as the token for a single request and a pact that they will argue only once in their lives. He wears it visibly at his waist to keep the promise difficult to ignore 22 25.
- Gold dragon bracelets — Gives one to the Third Prince through Beauty Zhou and the other to Qi Chengyou. The eldest prince later hangs his bracelet at his waist, mirroring Qi Yuanzuo’s way of wearing the emperor’s beads 8 50.
- Dragon pearl — Removes a golden pearl from a dragon ornament on the throne and later uses it to scatter other pearls while playing 11 18.
- Green Light Gathering Emerald — Obtains from the emperor as the reward for answering his textual examination 11.
- School supplies — Receives a schoolbag, brushes, ink, paper, and an inkstone from his father before beginning formal lessons 34.
- Handmade grass-bead strand — Makes this gift for the emperor using freely available grass beads, regarding it as something he can give independently of the wealth his father provides 48.
Relationships
- Qi Emperor — Father, primary caregiver, and strongest protector. Qi Yuanzuo cherishes his affection while trying to prevent the surveillance and conflict that destroyed their bond in the original story 1 3 22 46.
- The late empress — Mother, who died at his birth. He sincerely wonders whether she would like him and declares that he will miss her throughout his life 12.
- Qi Chengyou — Reborn eldest brother and former succession rival. Qi Yuanzuo wins his conditional support with affection and gifts; Chengyou subsequently escorts him to school and watches over him 3 8 41.
- Third Prince — Reborn younger brother whose original-life betrayal Qi Yuanzuo remembers. Despite teasing him, Qi Yuanzuo repeatedly saves him from Lady Zhou and stays beside him after his head injury 8 13 31 32 46.
- Empress Dowager — Paternal grandmother and hostile political figure. After her violence against his father and younger brother, Qi Yuanzuo resolves to help the emperor kill her 1 12 46 48.
- System 88 — Transmigration system and mental companion. Qi Yuanzuo complains about its lack of useful powers but relies on its information and discusses his plans with it 1 3 43.
- Bolao — Eunuch attendant and the original crown prince’s betrayer. Qi Yuanzuo retains him despite warnings, demands obedience, and punishes attempts to act without permission 1 20 35 36 43.
- Jiang Liang / Jiang Erya — Transmigrated female lead whom he brings into his household. He watches her system-related behavior, values her access to crop seeds, and retaliates when Zhaoyi Wei has her beaten 29 33 43 50.
- Lady Yin / Consort Yin — Maternal aunt and his father’s consort. He protects her from the Empress Dowager’s humiliation and visits afterward to check her injured knees 11 12 14.
- Yin Jinghan — Maternal grandfather and Grand Commandant. Qi Yuanzuo recognizes that his support is conditional and shaped by the Yin family’s political interests 11.
- Zhang Yao — Grand Tutor. Recognizes Qi Yuanzuo’s mastery of the primers, begins correcting his handwriting, and agrees to discuss joint schooling with Qi Chengyou 31 41.
- Xi Ming — Predatory imperial tutor whom Qi Yuanzuo associates with his original downfall. Qi Yuanzuo challenges his conduct; the emperor investigates and ultimately exiles him 1 16 18 20.
- Simiao and Fat Eunuch — Close attendants who assist with his care and carry out instructions. He appreciates their straightforward answers 13 20 33.
- Tabbyback — Consort Xian’s tabby cat, which Qi Yuanzuo befriends and feeds. Its fur is later used to carry oleander pollen in an attempt to poison him 23 25 36.
