When Lin Zhizhi left, Shao Lan had a bad feeling.
But it was only a feeling. Before going to bed, he bought a weapon from the vending machine to defend himself.
He had lived in a law-abiding society for too long. He only bought a knife, never considering a gun, which left him completely on the defensive now.
Now, the robbers' decision to send two men to 803 and one to 802 made Shao Lan absolutely certain-
Lin Zhizhi had sold them out.
Otherwise, how could the gang know so much about them?
Hatred burned inside him, and his knife whistled through the air. Shao Lan's face was expressionless. He no longer had any intention of holding back.
Zhang Fang was horrified. Abandoning his attack on Shao Lan, he knocked Xu Nan aside. "Nan, watch out!"
The dagger missed, and Shao Lan's expression darkened.
Zhang Fang's fighting skills could only be described as very, very good.
Unlike Jiang Mingran, who was simply fit from studying sports, this man was a trained fighter with extensive combat experience.
Xu Nan clearly knew that too. The first thing he did after escaping death was toss the Nail Gun to Zhang Fang. "Fang, kill him!!"
Zhang Fang caught the Nail Gun and aimed at Shao Lan.
This is bad. Shao Lan lunged for a chair and lifted it as a shield.
Nails flew from the gun, punching deep holes in the chair.
Zhang Fang was clearly their strongest fighter. But Xu Nan ranked highest as the brains of their three-man gang, and he was short and couldn't fight, so he usually carried the Nail Gun.
Just as the Nail Gun was about to force Shao Lan into a corner, Jiang Mingran scrambled up and charged at the blond-haired man nearest him.
As the two grappled, Pancake Uncle, who had been trembling like a leaf in the doorway, suddenly roared, raised the Induction Cooker, and charged at Xu Nan.
Xu Nan: "?"
The Induction Cooker struck Xu Nan squarely on the head. He collapsed, seeing stars.
"Nan!" Zhang Fang turned and shouted.
"Kill... kill him!" Xu Nan scrambled up, grabbed the Induction Cooker, and knocked Pancake Uncle down with it.
Though he hated Pancake Uncle enough to grit his teeth, Xu Nan understood that Shao Lan was the key figure on the opposing side.
Once Shao Lan was dead, dealing with the other two would be easy.
Shao Lan had already used the chaos to escape into the corridor. Xu Nan and Zhang Fang chased him, and the blond-haired man shook off Jiang Mingran and followed.
Despair filled Jiang Mingran's heart.
Shao Lan was smart, but he was fighting three against one, and one of them was a formidable fighter like Zhang Fang.
Shao Lan was almost certainly going to die.
With the last of his strength, Jiang Mingran turned his head toward the corridor. It was pitch-black, without a single source of light.
The three robbers could see nothing either. There was no telling where Shao Lan was hiding.
"It's fine. He's on this floor. He can't escape," Xu Nan instructed. "Blondie, guard the stairwell. Fang and I will search the corridor."
The blond-haired man obeyed and left, while Zhang Fang and Xu Nan searched step by step.
Suddenly, Xu Nan grabbed Zhang Fang.
Zhang Fang followed Xu Nan's gaze-a blurry dark figure was crouched in a corner of the corridor.
Was it Shao Lan?
"Watch out for a trap," Xu Nan warned quietly. "That brat's full of tricks."
Zhang Fang raised the gun and fired a nail at the figure. It didn't move.
"Sure enough, it's a decoy," Xu Nan said bitterly, turning in the opposite direction. "The elevator's just ahead. He probably isn't over here. Let's search back the other way. He's most likely hiding in another room."
Zhang Fang nodded.
But the instant he turned, he heard a blade cutting through the air behind him.
Zhang Fang dodged sharply to the side, but he couldn't evade it completely. The blade grazed his neck and plunged into his shoulder.
Zhang Fang spun around and fired the Nail Gun repeatedly.
In the faintest glimmer of light, he saw Shao Lan's bloodstained face.
That dark figure really was Shao Lan!
What kind of endurance did it take to withstand a shot without making a single sound, fooling them right under their noses?
The Nail Gun was hard to aim in the dark, but firing repeatedly at such close range was bound to land a hit. Sure enough, after several shots, the sound of a dagger hitting the floor rang out in the darkness.
Shao Lan's hand had been hit!
Zhang Fang's spirits lifted.
He switched the Nail Gun to his left hand, drew a cleaver with his right, and swung it forward. He was immensely strong. This strike would do far more damage than a nail, enough to kill in a single blow.
Shao Lan was dead!
Shao Lan jerked backward, but his back was already against the wall. He had nowhere left to retreat.
Zhang Fang grinned. He stepped forward and brought the cleaver down again.
Shao Lan didn't dodge! He took the blow head-on, then used the opening to grab Zhang Fang's shoulder.
Using the last of his strength, Shao Lan spun around with Zhang Fang and shoved him against the wall.
What good would that do? Zhang Fang almost laughed. Shao Lan didn't even have a weapon anymore. Did he think slamming him against a wall would kill him?
Then he felt his back touch something protruding from the wall.
When Zhang Fang realized what it was, his mind exploded.
No! No!!!
Zhang Fang desperately tried to stop himself.
But Shao Lan let his momentum carry him forward, crashing into Zhang Fang.
The protruding object was pressed down.
Xu Nan stood rooted to the spot, his face deathly pale. He didn't step forward.
There was no point anymore.
He couldn't believe Shao Lan had come up with this plan despite being completely outmatched in combat.
Shao Lan's final retreat, with his back against the wall and nowhere left to go, had actually been deliberate.
He had used it to press the elevator button.
Then, in a split second, he had forced Zhang Fang to press it too.
With nails embedded all over his body and a cleaver wound on top of them, Shao Lan had traded himself for Zhang Fang, taking their strongest fighter down with him.
Now, the elevator doors slowly opened.
"No! I don't want to participate again! I don't want to..."
Zhang Fang frantically ran toward the corridor, but the Property Manager had already appeared like a ghost, standing before him with a flashlight.
"Are you going to violate the Resident Regulations of [Happiness Residential Community]?" The Property Manager still wore her trademark professional smile.
A chill ran down Zhang Fang's spine. He pointed at Shao Lan, who had already entered the elevator. "No, I didn't press it! He did! I only touched it because he shoved me against the wall! He broke the rules! Go punish him!"
Under the elevator's cold white light, the badly wounded Shao Lan sat slumped on the floor. He said nothing, merely smiling through the blood covering his face.
As though she couldn't understand human speech at all, the Property Manager smiled and asked the distraught Zhang Fang, "Are you going to violate the Resident Regulations of [Happiness Residential Community]?"
Zhang Fang trembled. He knew what happened to those who violated them.
Filled with venomous resentment and fury, he entered the elevator.
"Weapons used inside the building cannot be brought into the instance," the Property Manager reminded him. "Doing so also counts as a violation of the regulations."
Zhang Fang closed his eyes briefly, then threw both the Nail Gun and the cleaver out of the elevator.
Xu Nan hurried forward to pick them up.
But just as he was about to flee with the weapons, the Property Manager turned toward him as though she had discovered something. "Oh, Resident Xu Nan, you're also a participant in this [game instance]."
Xu Nan froze. "Why? I didn't press the button!"
"A few instances are invitation-only," the Property Manager said with a smile. "What a coincidence. This instance has invited you."
"I refuse!" Xu Nan's hands were shaking. "It's an invitation, isn't it? I refuse the invitation!"
He turned to leave.
The Property Manager smiled and asked, "Are you sure you want to violate the Resident Regulations of [Happiness Residential Community]?"
Xu Nan went rigid.
Fuck! What kind of invitation couldn't be refused?
Watching the Property Manager approach, Xu Nan lost his nerve completely. Helplessly, he dropped the Nail Gun and cleaver and entered the elevator.
"I will kill you," he told Shao Lan viciously.
Shao Lan smiled weakly.
"You already missed your best chance to kill me," he said. "It'll probably be much harder from now on."
The elevator doors closed, and the Property Manager bowed with a smile. "Enjoy the game, all three of you."
