Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Chunin 50 Passed the Chunin Exams at six years old. Kakashi cites this achievement while defending his decision to recommend newly graduated students.
Jonin 50 Had become a jonin by Naruto’s current age. During Team 7’s missions, he is described as an elite jonin 20.

Background / History

Kakashi previously served in the Anbu, where assassination assignments were routine. That service also shaped his acceptance of the idea that ninja must function as tools of their village 24 39.

He was a student of Naruto’s father, the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze. Kakashi privately acknowledges that Naruto’s position as his teacher’s only surviving child partly influenced his decision to pass Team 7 7 16.

The loss of an important comrade remains an unresolved wound. During the bell test, Chiba’s insistence that comrades matter more than missions recalls that person so strongly that Kakashi briefly becomes lost in memory 16.

Before assigning Team 7 to him, Hiruzen Sarutobi briefed Kakashi on its members’ unusual backgrounds: Naruto was the Nine-Tails jinchuriki, Sasuke an Uchiha survivor, and Chiba a child Jiraiya had brought back from Mount Myōboku. Kakashi’s strength and extensive mission experience made him suitable for the assignment 27.

Appearance

  • Half-lidded, “dead-fish” eyes: reinforce his habitual deadpan expression 15 21 29.
  • Covered left eye: his forehead protector conceals the eye associated with his Sharingan 16 25.
  • Scarlet Sharingan: visible during his decisive attack against Zabuza 36.
  • Temporary crutch: used while recovering from the first confrontation with Zabuza 27 28.

Personality

Kakashi usually presents himself as relaxed, listless, and difficult to impress. He reads Icha Icha Paradise during the bell test and while traveling on missions, and jokes that Naruto and Sasuke passed as “freebies.” Repetitive errands wear down his already limited enthusiasm 15 16 17 20.

Beneath that manner, he is observant and willing to acknowledge his students’ strengths. He notices Sasuke’s fear of Chiba, suspects Chiba is concealing his abilities, and praises effective combat and rapid learning without reservation 14 20 27 28.

His teaching combines comradeship with harsh preparation for combat. He passes Team 7 for valuing one another, yet later makes killing the captured Kirigakure attackers a condition of continuing their dangerous mission. When trapped by Zabuza, his immediate concern is getting his students to safety 16 21 24.

Kakashi accepts concealed mission objectives without anger once Hiruzen explains their purpose. He regards patience with Team 7 as part of his responsibility as its leader 39.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Ninjutsu Copying

  • Matches Zabuza’s hand seals while both prepare Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet, rather than waiting for the completed technique 25.
  • Sees through Zabuza’s underwater approach and finishes his own seals before the opponent can complete an attack 25.
  • Limitation: its chakra expenditure exhausts him after the first battle, causing him to collapse and require recovery 26.

Lightning Release: Lightning Blade

  • Concentrates blue, nearly tangible lightning chakra around his right hand for a piercing strike 36.
  • Targets Zabuza’s heart after the Ninja Dogs immobilize him 36.
  • Haku intercepts the attack and dies in Zabuza’s place 36.

Water Release

  • Water Dragon Bullet: creates a large water dragon that clashes with Zabuza’s matching technique 25.
  • Great Waterfall Technique: gathers a destructive mass of water from the river, visibly lowering its level 25.
  • Water-clone deception: a Kakashi figure struck by Zabuza dissolves into water, allowing Kakashi to threaten him from another position 24.

Ninja Dog Summoning

  • Summons a squad of Ninja Dogs using a scroll pressed against the ground 36.
  • Uses his blood remaining on Zabuza’s sword to enable the dogs to track their target 36.
  • The dogs emerge beneath the bridge deck and restrain Zabuza with their bites 36.

Taijutsu and Ninja Tools

  • Restrains Naruto almost immediately during their first encounter at the training ground 14.
  • Counters Chiba’s Konoha Gale with the same technique; the exchange leaves Chiba’s leg aching 15.
  • Uses Thousand Years of Death to launch Naruto into the water during the bell test 15.
  • Intercepts attacks through the mist with accurately thrown kunai 32.
  • After Haku’s death disrupts Zabuza’s composure, wounds both of his arms and incapacitates him 36.

Substitution and Shadow Clones

  • Escapes Chiba’s Wind Release: Gale Palm through the Substitution Technique, leaving a wooden log behind 15.
  • Sends a shadow clone to deliver the ninja-cat mission while his original body attends to another assignment 41.

Instruction and Chakra Control

  • Demonstrates tree climbing by attaching chakra to his feet, including hanging upside down while recovering on a crutch 27.
  • Uses Chakra Paper to identify Chiba’s wind and fire natures 27.
  • Teaches Wind Release: Vacuum Great Sphere and Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet 28.
  • Explains that Fire Dragon Flame Bullet requires precise chakra control to direct flames from different angles 28.
  • Teaching limit: admits that wind and fire are not his specialties; after Chiba masters the offered techniques, he suggests requesting further instruction from Hiruzen 27 29.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Forehead protector — covers his left eye 16.
  • Kunai and shuriken — used for close-range threats, restraint, and intercepting attacks 14 24 32.
  • Two bells — the apparent objective of his team-selection test 15.
  • Chakra Paper — supplied for testing chakra nature; Chiba later requests another sheet for Nekomata 27 45.
  • Summoning scroll — used to call the Ninja Dog squad 36.
  • Icha Icha Paradise — frequently read during tests, travel, and recovery 15 20 29 30.

Relationships

  • Chiba — Student whose hidden strength and exceptional learning speed repeatedly surprise him. Kakashi teaches him advanced techniques and entrusts him with Naruto and Sasuke’s training during his recovery 27 28 29 34.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Student and his late teacher’s son. Kakashi recognizes his difficult childhood, challenges him to face lethal combat, and supports his entry into the Chunin Exams 16 21 44.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Student whose experience of the Uchiha massacre influences Kakashi’s assessment of his resilience and readiness to confront killing 16 22.
  • Minato Namikaze — Former teacher and Naruto’s father; Kakashi retains a personal sense of obligation toward his surviving child 7 16.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Hokage who assigns him Team 7 and explains the diplomatic objectives concealed within the Land of Waves mission 27 39.
  • Jiraiya — Respected senior whom Kakashi credits with Chiba’s apparent preparation and combat ability 15 21.
  • Zabuza Momochi — Opponent in two Land of Waves confrontations. Their first battle leaves Kakashi trapped until Chiba intervenes; the second ends with Zabuza incapacitated 24 36.
  • Iruka — Fellow instructor who objects to sending recent graduates into the Chunin Exams and considers Kakashi’s childhood achievements an unsuitable comparison 50.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Team 7 Formation

Kakashi arrives late enough to fall victim to Naruto’s chalkboard-eraser prank, then takes Chiba, Naruto, and Sasuke to the training ground. Chiba steals a bell during a coordinated exchange with Naruto and offers the two bells to his teammates. Kakashi’s follow-up questions reveal that the real test concerns comradeship, and all three pass 14 15 16.

Land of Waves Mission

After routine village assignments, Kakashi leads Team 7 on Tazuna’s C-rank escort mission. He notices signs of an ambush but allows the encounter to become a combat lesson. Following Chiba’s defeat of the attackers, he identifies the assignment as B-rank and consults all three students before continuing 17 20 21.

Zabuza traps him in a Water Prison during their first confrontation. Chiba breaks the technique, allowing Kakashi to resume fighting with the Sharingan and Water Release. Kakashi initially accepts Zabuza’s apparent death, but later suspects the supposed pursuit ninja helped him survive 24 25 26 29.

While recovering at Tazuna’s home, Kakashi begins chakra-control training and gives Chiba individual ninjutsu instruction. At the bridge, he fights Zabuza while Chiba guards Tazuna. His Lightning Blade kills Haku when the boy shields Zabuza, after which Kakashi disables Zabuza’s arms 27 28 32 36.

Kakashi helps bury Haku and Zabuza and remains with the team until the bridge is complete. Back in Konoha, Hiruzen reveals that the mission was intended to build diplomatic ties with the Land of Waves and secure access to its construction workers 38 39.

Independent Mission and Chunin Exams

Kakashi assigns the trio a mission to obtain Nekomata’s paw print, leaving them to complete it without him. He subsequently recommends Chiba, Naruto, and Sasuke for the Chunin Exams, emphasizing that participation is voluntary. Before the exams, he authorizes Chiba’s visit to Nekomata on the condition that he return promptly and remain safe 41 44 45.
