Background / History
Reincarnation and Daoist Inheritance
In his previous life, Lin Yun was struck by a Dayun truck while returning home from work. His soul passed through a region of immortal radiance before reincarnating on the Tian Nan Continent. His grandfather’s death later restored his previous-life memories, including Daoist scriptures from the Zu Mountain world. Dissatisfied with his poor spiritual roots and family cultivation method, he dispersed his magical power and began practicing the White Yang Diagram 1.
Recognizing his inherited token as Yellow Maple Valley’s Ascension Token revealed that he inhabited the world of A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality. When two Black Fiend Sect cultivators came to capture him for a Blood Sacrifice, he planted heart demons that drove them to kill each other. He then sealed the Lin Family’s ancestral valley against further intruders 1 2 3.
Yellow Maple Valley and the Hundred Herbs Garden
Lin Yun entered Yellow Maple Valley through the Ascension Token despite his four-attribute spiritual root. Sect Master Zhong Lingdao promised him a Foundation Establishment Pill after five years, but Lin Yun expected his inherited cultivation methods to establish a foundation without one 4.
To supply his cultivation and artifact refinement, he established mortal merchant associations that collected gold, silver, copper, iron, and tin. He also secured a long-term assignment tending Martial Uncle Ma’s Hundred Herbs Garden. The garden provided spiritual energy and medicinal resources, while his use of Yin-Yang Dew helped its herbs flourish 5 8 9 10.
During a visit to the Yuanwu Kingdom, he met Xin Ruoyin, studied formations with her, and began treating her Dragon-Yin Body. Han Li later joined him at the Hundred Herbs Garden and sought his guidance in alchemy. Lin Yun’s improved Foundation Establishment Pill persuaded Han Li to forgo the Blood-Colored Trial 11 12 15 17.
Blood-Colored Forbidden Land
Lin Yun entered the forbidden land to find enough primordial qi for his final White Yang Diagram. Using Formless Sword Escape, he bypassed the Ring Mountain Range’s obstacles and excavated a concealed cultivation chamber. There he completed his Innate Five-Element Dao Body and reached Foundation Establishment 20 21.
Afterward, he rescued Nangong Wan from the Ink Flood Dragon and helped kill it. Exposure to the dragon’s aphrodisiac mist forced them to use the Purple Palace Secret Manual to regain control; nothing happened between them. Nangong Wan agreed to conceal his escape art, and Lin Yun left with the dragon’s soul essence and a large collection of spiritual herbs 22 23 24 25.
Travel and the Demonic War
After registering his Foundation Establishment cultivation, Lin Yun established a cave abode in the Taiyue Mountain Range and resumed searching for the Ancient Teleportation Formation. His travels also produced a preliminary Taiyi Five-Smoke Gauze and his first independently designed treasure, the Supreme Goodness Pearl 26 28 29.
He eventually located the formation beneath a concealed spirit stone mine in Jianzhou. By controlling a Ghost Spirit Sect cultivator, he obtained intelligence about the approaching invasion. He recruited Xin Ruoyin to repair the formation as an escape route, then spent over a year on the Golden Drum Plains secretly killing powerful Demonic Path cultivators and collecting materials for a White Bone Divine Demon 31 32 34 35.
Settling Mortal Ties and Preparing to Leave
While protecting the Wu Family, Lin Yun reunited with his mortal parents after nearly thirty years apart. Before leaving, he gave the Lin Family a martial cultivation method that could lead descendants with spiritual roots into cultivation and help those without them protect the family. The visit strengthened his resolve to pursue the Dao without lingering mortal attachments 37 38 39.
He escorted the Wu Family to safety, collected his final shipments of metals, and transferred ownership of his merchant associations to their managers. In Yue Capital, he joined Han Li’s group against the Black Fiend Sect, destroyed the Four Great Blood Attendants, and obtained materials for his external-pill experiment 40 41 42 44.
With the Seven Sects’ defeat approaching, he brought Xin Ruoyin and Xiao Mei to the teleportation site. While the formation was being repaired, he completed the Five Elements Origin Pill. He then rescued Nangong Wan again and killed the Ghost Spirit Sect elder surnamed Li, only to be stopped by another cultivator before escaping 45 47 48 50.
Appearance
- Youthful features: At thirty-three, he still looks eighteen or nineteen 38.
- Handsome face: His appearance resembles his father’s, whose features include sword-like brows and star-bright eyes 38.
- Clothing: Wears a moon-white scholar’s robe when visiting the Lin Family Medical Hall 38.
- Immortal-like bearing: Traveling on five-colored cloud and mist makes him resemble a youthful immortal 28.
Personality
Lin Yun values fate and karmic ties, drawing these ideas from the Zu Mountain scriptures even though his current world lacks the same strict heavenly causality. He refuses to seize Xin Ruoyin’s inheritance and accepts Han Li’s decision to avoid the Blood-Colored Trial rather than forcing events to follow the story he remembers 10 11 17.
He is cautious about revealing his methods. He conceals his cultivation, understates his battlefield achievements, and initially withholds his sword’s invisible properties from Nangong Wan to avoid disputes with the Covering Moon Sect. Against enemies, however, he readily uses deception, mental manipulation, and lethal ambushes 2 23 35 40.
His generosity is especially evident toward talented cultivators: he treats Xin Ruoyin because he cannot bear to see her formation talent wasted and repeatedly supplies Han Li with instruction and resources. He is also openly dismissive of inefficient alchemy and fiercely objects when others mistake his Formless Sword Escape for Old Monster Qiong’s technique 13 24 26 27.
Abilities & Skills
Daoist Qi Perception and Cultivation
Lin Yun’s inherited qi-discerning methods let him cultivate through direct perception of primordial qi rather than relying entirely on spiritual roots 4.
- Can cultivate as quickly as someone with a True Spirit Root when primordial qi is sufficiently abundant 4.
- Uses Qi-Observing Art to locate hidden sect territory, detect formations, and find spiritually rich cultivation sites 4 10 20.
- His Innate Five-Element Dao Body greatly improves his affinity with all five elements 21.
- The Mortal Realm’s sparse and comparatively dormant primordial qi prevents him from fully practicing some Zu Mountain methods 22 26.
Profound Aperture
The Profound Aperture is a spatial aperture neither inside nor outside his body, connected to his flesh and soul while remaining united with heaven and earth 22.
- Draws in and refines surrounding spiritual qi into liquid True Essence 21 33.
- Nurtures the Clearvoid Invisible Sword with spatial power and strengthens its connection to him 22.
- Stores herbs separately from his Storage Bag, concealing them from the Seven Sects’ Spirit-Sniffing Beasts 25.
- Serves as the furnace for refining his external Five Elements Origin Pill 47.
Formless Sword Art and Sword Escape
His Daoist Orthodox School Formless Sword Art works through the Clearvoid Invisible Sword, allowing both elusive attacks and movement through the void 9 24.
- Conceals himself and his sword between existence and nonexistence rather than merely making them invisible 24.
- Passes through restrictions, mountains, and underground terrain 9 20.
- Steals guarded herbs before demonic beasts can react 20 25.
- Strikes through an enemy’s protective barrier by bringing the sword out of the void inside it 40.
- Continuous sword flight and escape techniques consume magical power and can require recovery stops 20.
Five-Element Divine Abilities
- Innate One Qi Divine Finger: Adapts Innate One Qi Great Grasping into a concentrated finger attack. The modification compensates for insufficient primordial qi to sustain the complete hand technique; its early form can restrain the Ink Flood Dragon 22 23.
- Great Five-Element Extinction Divine Light: Destroys spirit snakes and the Four Great Blood Attendants 40 42.
- External-pill enhancement: The Five Elements Origin Pill supplies Core Formation-level power, but using its True Essence for the divine light depletes it heavily. Lin Yun therefore reserves that application as a trump card 48.
Alchemy and Medical Knowledge
Lin Yun inherits the Pure Yang Alchemy tradition of Lü Dongbin, whose teachings encompass both internal and external alchemy 7.
- Identifies every medicinal herb in Martial Uncle Ma’s garden and draws on the Lin Family’s herb-growing training 8.
- Improves crude pills and seals escaping medicinal power 13 15.
- Refines a Foundation Establishment Pill with herbs, spiritual energy, and Yin-Yang Dew into two superior pills; he tells Han Li they can guarantee Foundation Establishment even with fake spiritual roots 17.
- Diagnoses Xin Ruoyin’s Dragon-Yin Body and develops suppressive medicines, but initially lacks a permanent cure 11 27.
- Identifies the components of Han Li’s green liquid as weakened Cosmic Light True Water and Three Lights Divine Water, then separates them for later use 17 26 30.
Artifact Refinement
His Zu Mountain techniques allow him to create magical treasures before reaching conventional Core Formation 18 19.
- Uses Solar True Fire to accelerate extraction of Five Metals Essence and artifact forging 6.
- Refines the Supreme Goodness Pearl with water instead of fire to preserve its water-element energy and remove residual flood-dragon toxicity 29.
- Designs Han Li’s Wind-Fire Boat around wood-attribute magical power while retaining wind-and-fire defenses and attacks 30.
- Combines methods from both cultivation worlds in his external-pill experiment 47.
Formations and Spiritual Arts
- Formation expertise: Repairs the Lin Family’s Cloudmist Illusion Array, studies ancient arrays, helps Xin Ruoyin restore the Five Elements Reversal Formation, and protects his cave abode with a Five-Element Strange Gate Formation 3 11 15 26.
- Heart demons: Uses the Nine Heavens Esoteric Demon Profound Scripture to plant thoughts that provoke murderous conflict and glean information from his targets’ minds 2.
- Soul-Bewitching and Spirit-Seizing Art: Influences a Ghost Spirit Sect cultivator and uses him as an intelligence source 31 35.
- Aura concealment: Hides his true cultivation so effectively that even a Nascent Soul cultivator would need to examine him carefully to discover it 12.
- Purple Mansion/Purple Palace teachings: Cultivates spiritual methods and teaches Nangong Wan a formula that helps suppress the aphrodisiac mist’s effects 24 26.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Voice-and-Image Transmission Talismans — Uses them for surveillance and gives one to Han Li to coordinate their reunion near the Ancient Teleportation Formation 40 44.
Relationships
