As he pondered, Gyarados had already opened its gaping maw, baring sharp teeth still slick with a little saliva, and lunged to bite Ditto hard on the neck!
Seeing this, Drake dared not let his attention wander again. He waved a hand and shouted, "Ditto, dodge, quickly!"
Hearing the command, Ditto, which had already wanted to dodge, hurriedly twisted its body. Fortunately, it moved in time and narrowly slipped past Gyarados's jaws, avoiding the attack.
Yet although the bite missed, that very fact meant the two Pokémon had not put any distance between them. Instead, they remained locked together in the pool.

But... although Ditto had dodged those gaping jaws, the very next second, Drake watched helplessly as Gyarados pressed forward again and rammed its head into Ditto.
This time, Ditto failed to dodge and took the hit squarely.
