Background / History
Hikaru entered Jinguji High School directly from its junior high division, giving him considerable familiarity with the campus and its clubs. He had practiced kyudo before joining the high school club, although his claim of “years of dedicated” training contrasts with his later reference to practicing for months 9 11.
Befriending Uchiha Naruto
Hikaru introduced himself to Uchiha Naruto on their first day in Class 1-B. A joke about common surnames broke the ice, and Hikaru quickly began sharing school gossip and questioning Naruto’s lack of interest in dating 6.
During lunch, he showed Naruto footage of an apartment fire whose flames inexplicably retreated into the building. Hikaru suspected video editing; the footage was deleted before he could replay it 7.
The two were paired in Home Economics. Hikaru’s unsuccessful radish peeling was followed by Naruto’s remarkable demonstration of Katsuramuki, which Hikaru loudly brought to the teacher’s attention. Their pair received an A+, and Hikaru afterward invited Naruto to visit the Kyudo Club 8.
Club Visits
Hikaru explained that Jinguji required every student to join a club and guided Naruto to the kyudo dojo. He demonstrated his own shooting, then lent Naruto his equipment to try the sport 9.
When Naruto suddenly displayed expert form and performed Yugaeri, Hikaru defended him against doubts about his experience by comparing him to the prodigy known as the Kendo Club Witch. After Naruto declined the club president’s invitation, Hikaru repeatedly argued that joining would provide opportunities to grow closer to her 11 12.
Hikaru continued following Naruto’s activities, learning about his tennis performance despite the small number of spectators. He again encouraged him to choose a club, particularly kyudo 27.
Support Club Application
After telling Naruto about Matsudaira Chiyo’s distinguished family and charitable work, Hikaru learned that Naruto had joined her Support Club. Eager to join himself, he declared that he had wanted to quit kyudo for some time and promised Naruto a weekend feast if the introduction succeeded 37.
Despite his usual talkativeness, Hikaru became flushed and tongue-tied when meeting Chiyo. Naruto recommended his knowledge, memory, and familiarity with fellow students, securing him a private interview. Hikaru failed the interview and emerged devastated, apologizing to Naruto before fleeing; Chiyo said only that she had told him the truth 37 38.
Appearance
- Small eyes, described darting about when he doubts Naruto’s explanation for a homemade lunch 37.
- Resemblance to his father, according to relatives who say he looks and behaves just as his father did as a child 27.
Personality
Hikaru is outgoing, talkative, and quick to make friends. He enjoys gossip and teasing Naruto about romance, often treating high school dating as an essential part of youth. His confidence is also thick-skinned: after shooting the wrong archery target, he dismisses the mistake as an off day rather than showing embarrassment 6 7 9.
His interest in girls frequently becomes lecherous. He maintains ranked lists of female students and makes objectifying comments about their appearance, attracting Naruto’s criticism and Yasero Saki’s discomfort. Even after admitting that he has not spoken to a single girl in his class during the first week, he rejects Naruto’s advice to change, proudly attributing his behavior to his father 8 9 27.
Abilities & Skills
Kyudo
Hikaru has enough experience to perform the shooting sequence properly, becoming noticeably serious when handling his bow 9.
- Executes the movements from ashibumi, the opening stance, through kai, the full draw 9.
- Hits a bull’s-eye during his demonstration, but strikes the target for position four while standing at position three; the shot does not count 9.
- Began kyudo to learn Yugaeri, but has not successfully performed it after months of practice 11.
School Knowledge and Information Gathering

- Knows campus routes, club requirements, and student gossip 6 9.
- Records girls’ names, class rankings, interests, and perceived qualities in a notebook 8 27.

Food Appraisal
Hikaru identifies differences in the quality of Naruto’s lunch and gives surprisingly detailed comments despite his poor cooking-class performance 8 37.
- Identifies water chestnuts in a meatball and describes its meat mixture as thirty percent fat and seventy percent lean 37.
- Correctly notices that the grilled mackerel is less accomplished than the meatballs 37.
