|---|---|---|
| Established Conqueror’s Haki user | 6 | Participates in the Haki clash over Hachinosu alongside the other division commanders. His Haki is weaker than Rocks’s. |
| Strengthened Conqueror’s Haki | 10 | After reciting Lind’s introduction before Sengoku, releases Haki stronger than his earlier display on Hachinosu. The narration links the increase to the effect of a stirring declaration on his will. |
Appearance
- Height: Over six meters tall, making him conspicuous even among the pirates on Hachinosu 8 9.
- Mustache accessory: Described as wearing a “toy beard” or “toy mustache,” which he twirls or fiddles with while talking 9 42.
Personality
Whitebeard is hearty and welcoming toward fellow pirates. When he finds Lind standing apart from the banquet, he approaches to reassure him and invite him for a drink. He readily calls Lind his brother, shares treasured liquor, and insists on collecting his requested poem himself rather than making Lind deliver it 8.
He enjoys dramatic displays, particularly when they can unsettle Sengoku. Shiki’s grand entrance inspires him to commission his own verse from Lind, which he later recites before challenging the Marine. Nevertheless, he returns to Hachinosu without repeating the performance, explaining that his earlier introduction was intended to undermine Sengoku’s presence 6 9 13.
His friendliness does not extend to a concern for fair fighting against enemies. He approves of Lind capturing Sengoku’s weaker subordinates and joins in demanding a ransom. He regards taking prisoners without indiscriminate killing as comparatively merciful conduct for pirates 11 12.
Abilities & Skills
Tremor-Tremor Fruit
Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit gives his attacks tremendous destructive power 6 44.
- Uses Seaquake to drive Sengoku back before withdrawing to his ship 11.
- His clashes with Sengoku produce destructive fallout severe enough to force Lind and Zephyr away from their battlefield 44.
Haki
Whitebeard possesses extensive knowledge of all three types of Haki and helps Lind improve their practical application 8 9.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Projects his will across Hachinosu during the commanders’ clash, though Rocks ultimately overwhelms the competing displays 6.
- Conqueror’s Coating: Infuses his weapon with Conqueror’s Haki. His opening clash with Sengoku occurs without their attacks touching and splits the sky 11.
- Armament Haki: Coats Ame no Murakumogiri with Armament alongside Conqueror’s Haki 11.
- Observation Haki: Is among the experts at the banquet who can hear the conversation between him and Lind 8.
Close Combat and Endurance
Whitebeard can contest Sengoku, who already possesses Admiral-level strength despite holding the rank of Vice Admiral 9 11.
- Gains a slight advantage in their initial Conqueror’s Coating clash 11.
- Fights Sengoku with both his weapon and hand-to-hand attacks; their battle splits the island 11.
- Continues the engagement for more than a day before withdrawing because Marine reinforcements are expected, not because Sengoku has been defeated 11.
- Again holds Sengoku in battle during the Orlan Sea campaign 44 47.
Geppo
Whitebeard uses Geppo to launch himself from his ship and reach Sengoku 10.
- Can fight in the air, but Lind specifically notes that aerial combat is not his strong suit and seeks an island for his duel 10.
Training and Command
- Spars with Lind and provides systematic instruction in swordsmanship and Haki 8 9.
- His experience developing Devil Fruit abilities helps Lind refine his telekinesis 17.
- Commands officers ranging from Rear Admiral to elite Vice Admiral strength, several of whom accompany him to support Lind’s campaign 41.
Equipment / Items
- Ame no Murakumogiri — Weapon used against Sengoku, reinforced with both Armament Haki and Conqueror’s Coating 11.
- Autumn — A Skillful Grade double-edged longsword crafted in the Flower Country. Whitebeard gives it to Lind in thanks for his poem, choosing it to complement Lind’s existing sword and apparent Two-Sword Style 9.
- Saved fine liquor — Shares bottles from his personal collection with Lind during their time on Hachinosu 8.
Background / History
Meeting Lind on Hachinosu
As First Division Commander, Whitebeard answers Shiki’s provocative return with Conqueror’s Haki. Lind’s newly awakened Haki and bold introductory verse attract his attention, and he asks Shiki to introduce them 6.
Whitebeard supports the view that Lind is too strong to remain merely Shiki’s deputy, since doing so would upset the balance between divisions. Following Lind’s spar with John and appointment as Seventh Division Commander, Whitebeard congratulates Shiki on gaining such a powerful ally 7.
At the ensuing banquet, he commissions a personal poem from Lind and warns him not to be deceived by Charlotte Linlin’s appearance. Over the following days, he becomes one of Lind’s regular drinking and sparring companions 8.
First Expedition Against Sengoku
Seven days after the banquet, Whitebeard visits Lind with Autumn and receives the completed poem. Pleased with the result, he invites Lind to accompany him in challenging Sengoku and promises to back him up. They spend another week at sea exchanging Haki pointers before encountering Sengoku’s warship 9.
After Lind exhausts himself testing Sengoku, Whitebeard takes over. Lind captures the Marine crew and joins Whitebeard in surrounding their opponent. Unable to defeat Sengoku quickly, the pair withdraw with the prisoners and captured warship 10 11.
Their ransom negotiations with Kong begin at one billion Beli and settle at 180 million Beli for the Marines and warships. Sengoku and Zephyr conduct the exchange, after which Whitebeard and Lind return to a welcome led by Rocks 12.
Recruitment and Support for the Seventh Division
During the recruitment battle celebrating their victory, Whitebeard notices a powerful young Oni and suggests that Lind consider him as a future right-hand man. The recruit instead chooses Whitebeard’s division; he is later identified as Leo 13 14 16.
Whitebeard also helps finance Lind’s development. Lind borrows tens of millions of Beli from him and Shiki to refit the Wanderer 19.
Orlan Sea Campaign
Lind summons Whitebeard from the latter reaches of the New World to counter powerful Marines during his expansion campaign. Whitebeard praises the Seventh Division’s training and brings officers of his own to strengthen the expedition 41.
On June 1, 1480, he boards the refitted Wanderer and agrees to handle Sengoku if the Marine appears. When Sengoku and Zephyr intercept the fleet, Whitebeard faces his old rival while Lind fights Zephyr 42 44.
The fighting lasts a day and night before Sengoku orders a withdrawal upon learning of the raid on Marine Headquarters. Whitebeard only subsequently learns that Shiki, Rocks, and the other participating commanders killed three Admiral-level World Government fighters 47.
Bounty History
| Bounty | Chapter | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 1.26 billion Beli | 6 | Listed when Lind identifies the Rocks Pirates’ division commanders. |
| 1.66 billion Beli | 49 | Issued in the later bounty revision. Shiki’s new 1.88 billion bounty surpasses Whitebeard’s for the first time. |
