Scrimgeour nodded earnestly.
"All right, then I'll leave it to you."
Edward felt rather helpless. He had still wanted to use Karkaroff as bait to catch Death Eaters.
Scrimgeour left.
"So, Dolores, what else did you want to do by staying behind?"
Umbridge was momentarily at a loss. She glanced at Dawlish, hesitating over whether to take out the letter appointing her Acting Headmistress of Hogwarts.
After thinking it over carefully, she decided not to produce it and instead said in a sickly-sweet voice:
"Have you forgotten, Headmaster? I'm still Hogwarts' Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. I heard that Snape has been covering the lessons while I was away. Since he's going to the Ministry of Magic for questioning, I think it's time I came back to teach."
Meanwhile, the students, who had spent the night sleeping on the floor of the Great Hall, soon learned three major pieces of news:
First, the explosion last night had been caused by a Death Eater casting the Dark Mark inside Hogwarts.
Second, Professor Snape and the Headmaster of Durmstrang had been taken away by Ministry of Magic Aurors for questioning.
Third, Pink Toad Umbridge was back as their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher!
The students buzzed with discussion, talking about what had happened last night and voicing their loathing for the Pink Toad. The Durmstrang students were the exact opposite, sitting quietly without a word.
Being suddenly brought to an unfamiliar place by their headmaster for a six-month "exchange" had been surprising enough, but just two days later, their headmaster had been arrested by the Ministry of Magic-this was utterly ridiculous!
They felt as though the world had suddenly left them isolated.
"Damn it! Bloody hell! That disgusting old hag!"
