Seeing Lockhart look his way, Harry gave a start, thinking his invisibility had failed. He looked down, but he still could not see his body. Had Lockhart discovered him, then?
Harry was secretly alarmed.
The first time he had used the Invisibility Cloak, he had slipped away right under Snape's and Quirrell's noses. Neither of them had been able to see through it. The only person who had seen through his invisibility was Headmaster Dumbledore, now hailed as Europe's foremost white wizard.
Could Lockhart actually have the ability to see through the Invisibility Cloak?
While Harry was still silently reeling, Lockhart broke into a broad smile and said in an exceedingly cheerful voice, "Aha, I ought to open the door wider! That way, more people can know what I'm doing, and more people can know just how popular I am, how great I am! Hahaha!"
As he spoke, he sprang from his chair, made his way to the door with dancing steps, and opened the office door all the way.
Harry quietly stepped back, avoiding his touch. Lockhart, meanwhile, remained completely unaware of his presence.
When Lockhart turned and went back behind the large desk to continue writing something, Harry quietly followed him inside and stood beside him.
Only from this angle could he see clearly what Lockhart was doing.
A great many letters lay spread across the desk. With just a casual glance, Harry could tell that these letters had all come from Lockhart's admirers. There looked to be at least several hundred.
Judging by the colors of the envelopes and stationery, along with the handwriting he glimpsed, most of them had probably been sent by witches, young witches at that. At least, Harry could not imagine a man writing a letter on pink stationery in a pink envelope.
