Harry frowned slightly. He and Qiu had spent almost an hour making their way around the entire room, but the scar on his forehead had not reacted at all.
The room held all sorts of strange and curious things.
Among them were things left by all the students and teachers who had discovered this place over the past thousand years. But Harry was also certain that quite a few things had been left here by the Castle's House-elves.
Harry even discovered, to his surprise, a few things that seemed, possibly, probably, perhaps, to have vanished when students were practicing the Vanishing Spell.
Professor McGonagall had once said that although the Vanishing Spell was said to make things vanish, its essence was actually closer to changing an object's state completely, from existence to nonexistence.
Harry had not understood that during class, and he still did not understand it now.
He was not the only one who did not understand. Many more of the young wizards could not comprehend it either.
But Professor McGonagall had not explained it any further.
She had simply said that the Vanishing Spell changed an object's state to "nonexistent," so when the Counter-Spell was used, there was a certain chance of restoring the object to a state of existence. Then the object would appear.
But once an object was transformed into nonexistence, it would no longer remain in its original location.
Thus, with the Vanishing Spell, the sooner the restoration spell was used, the higher the chance of successful restoration tended to be.
However, Professor McGonagall had also mentioned that although things vanished with the Vanishing Spell theoretically could never reappear if no Counter-Spell was used or the Counter-Spell failed, there was still a small chance that they might appear again.
For instance, Professor McGonagall had mentioned
