After surviving Neil’s possession, Harry used magic to improve his place with the Dursleys and learned he had been accepted to Hogwarts. He reached the school, made friends and enemies, began classes, and decided to study Occlumency while wondering about the item Hagrid had taken from Gringotts.

• Harry recovered from his fever with Neil’s memories, learned to meditate, and used the Heart Bewitching Spell to persuade Dudley to get him moved out of the cupboard.
• Harry received his Hogwarts letter, and after Hagrid arrived, learned about his parents and traveled with him to Diagon Alley, where he discovered his Gringotts inheritance and met Ollivander.
• Harry reached King’s Cross, found the hidden platform, and boarded the Hogwarts Express, where he met Neville, Hermione, Ron, and Draco Malfoy, whom he punched after Draco insulted his parents.
• Hagrid led the first-years to Hogwarts by boat, and Harry joined Gryffindor with Ron after the Sorting Hat ceremony.
• Harry began classes, saw McGonagall demonstrate Transfiguration, and lost fifty Gryffindor points after confronting Snape in Potions.
• Harry and Ron visited Hagrid, where Harry recalled the secret item Hagrid had retrieved from Gringotts for Dumbledore and wondered whether it had been the target of the break-in.
• Harry borrowed a booklet about Occlumency and decided to study its techniques while joining Ron, Padma, Parvati, and Lavender at their work table.

Harry joined Gryffindor’s Quidditch team, helped defeat a troll, and began investigating Snape’s interest in the Philosopher’s Stone. At Hogwarts for Christmas, Harry found his mental strength had grown before a mysterious present knocked him unconscious and scarlet eyes turned toward the castle.

• Harry caught a fast-moving ball during flying practice, and Oliver Wood made him Gryffindor’s first-team Seeker while Ron became reserve Keeper.
• Harry and Ron’s planned duel with Draco became a public match, where Harry disarmed Draco with Expelliarmus.
• Harry, Ron, and Neville rescued Hermione from a troll and helped defeat it, after which Hermione took the blame for their presence.
• Harry played Seeker in Gryffindor’s match against Slytherin as his broom shook violently, and Hermione suspected Snape was jinxing him.
• Harry, Ron, and Hermione questioned Hagrid about Fluffy and learned the dog guarded something for Dumbledore, then began searching for information about Nicolas Flamel and the Philosopher’s Stone.
• Harry stayed at Hogwarts for Christmas and taught Ron, Hermione, and Neville his meditation method, while he and Ron failed to find a safe way into the Restricted Section.
• Harry opened Christmas presents, collapsed when a paper-wrapped parcel produced a piercing cacophony, and scarlet eyes appeared in a gray place between reality and illusion.
