"Karn, what are you doing?"
"Gwen? Why are you calling so early in the morning?"
"Early in the morning? The school bus leaves in ten minutes. Are you planning to give up your internship at the Osborn Group?"
Only after hearing Gwen on the phone did Karn remember what was in the Diary. "Kane Penter" had earned an internship at Oscorp through his grades. He had already gone for two days, and apparently he had to go again today.
Karn was about to make an excuse to get out of it, but something else occurred to him. After a moment of thought, he told Gwen, "You guys go ahead. I'll take a cab to the Osborn Group in a bit. Let the teacher know for me."
"What? Why should I do that... Hello? Karn?"
Before Gwen could say much more, she heard the disconnected tone. Karn's sudden decision to dump the responsibility on her and hang up immediately sent her blood pressure soaring.
Peter Parker, who was nearby, happened to overhear Gwen's call and asked, "Is Penter not going to make the school bus?"
"He said he had something to do and would go straight to the Osborn Group later," Gwen said helplessly.
"Could it be because Jim and his gang went after Penter yesterday? I heard the teachers already know about it." Like someone making a clandestine handoff, Peter Parker whispered to Gwen Stacy, "But Jim and the others haven't come to school either. Once everyone's here, though, the school will definitely look into it."
After all, it had been a cafeteria fight. Even the principal might know about it. Midtown High School might not have been outstanding, but it certainly wasn't bad, and it took school rules and discipline fairly seriously.
