The square before the Great Sept of Baelor.

On the hastily erected platform, Cersei sat beneath a canopy, her face taut beneath her veil.

"Accompanied" by two septas, Sansa Stark stood in a corner some distance away, her face as white as paper, her body trembling slightly.

Below the platform, the people of King's Landing surged like a rolling tide, their voices raising a deafening clamor.

Two Gold Cloak guards escorted Eddard Stark onto the platform.

He looked even more haggard than he had in the dungeon, and his steps faltered, but his back remained straight.

His gray eyes swept across the crowd, passed over Cersei, and finally settled on Sansa. A trace of profound pain flashed through them before giving way to silent resolve.

When Eddard learned that Robert was dead, he sank into deep despair.

His dear friend had died at the hands of the Lannisters, yet he was the one to be branded a kingslayer.

He remembered the past, how he and Robert had galloped across the battlefield in high spirits, and tears of regret ran down his face.

Joffrey walked to the edge of the platform and looked down upon the masses.

He cleared his throat, his voice ringing clearly across the square. "Subjects of King's Landing, the man kneeling before you is Eddard Stark, and he has committed heinous crimes!

"He betrayed his king, my father, Robert Baratheon, the first of his name. He exploited my father's trust to commit a vile murder!

"Worse still, he harbored treacherous intentions, taking in Rhaegar's son and plotting to collude with the Targaryen remnants to overthrow our lawful rule and restore that deposed false dynasty! He is a traitor, a kingslayer, a cancer upon the kingdom!"

The crowd was whipped into a frenzy, roaring and cursing in anger.
