Background / History
Early Life and Expulsion
Qyburn was born to a washerwoman who became pregnant by her lord. His father was dead by the time he reached his teens, and his brothers refused to let a washerwoman’s son become a knight. They offered him money and a choice between the Wall, the Citadel, and the Faith. Finding the Wall too cold and the Faith too dull, he chose the Citadel 3.
He forged his maester’s chain and ring, including a healer’s link, but was expelled for experiments he acknowledged were immoral. Qyburn regarded those experiments as investigations into the nature of the world and accused the Citadel of suppressing knowledge about magic. He subsequently sought Tywin Lannister’s patronage, hoping the wealthy lord would fund his research, but was thrown out 3 5 6.
Meeting Gendry
Unable to secure a suitable patron in Westeros, Qyburn sailed for Myr aboard The Telescope. He took an interest in Gendry’s physique, deduced that he was a nobleman’s bastard, and offered to teach him legitimate medicine rather than his more disturbing experiments 3.
During a pirate attack in the Stepstones, Qyburn rallied the Myrish sailors and threw medicinal powder into Goldtooth’s eyes and facial wound, allowing Gendry to retreat. After the fighting, he treated Gendry’s injured arm. Seeing the boy without his mask, he recognized his resemblance to Renly and understood his connection to King Robert. He pledged himself as Gendry’s subordinate and mentor, addressing him as “Your Highness” 4 5.
Service in Essos
Qyburn and Gendry entered the Wolf Pack Company in Myr. Qyburn supplied medical expertise while continuing Gendry’s education in history, politics, and the geography of Essos. He proposed the Disputed Lands as a base and cited the Ninepenny Kings’ alliance of pirates, merchants, mercenaries, and exiled knights as a model for expansion 5 6 7 13.
As Gendry seized estates and freed slaves, Qyburn took responsibility for censuses, wealth inventories, land surveys, intelligence, and spies. By the negotiations with Garlan and Margaery Tyrell, Gendry publicly introduced him as his Master of Whisperers 14 23.
Within the Twin Cities Alliance, Qyburn reported on foreign powers, assessed the threat of a Westerosi invasion, and helped develop possible landing plans. His later work included obtaining Reek’s confession about Ramsay Snow and investigating ways to deepen Gendry’s bloodline power 36 42 43 45.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and slightly stooped 3 43.
- Face: Prominent blue eyes surrounded by many wrinkles, with a habitual smile that gives him a kindly, grandfatherly appearance 3 43.
- Hair: Described as more gray than white in his introductory appearance and during Reek’s interrogation; another passage calls him white-haired 3 15 43.
- Clothing: Wears a black mail shirt when preparing to travel with the company, though its weight strains him; later wears gray clothing with a Wolf Pack badge 10 45.
Personality
Qyburn combines an amiable manner with an obsessive interest in medicine, heredity, and magic. He considers the human body a source of untapped power and hopes to create invincible warriors by combining medicine with sorcery. His contempt for the Citadel’s “gray sheep” stems from his belief that they deny or suppress the forces shaping the world 3 9.
He is observant and pragmatic: he infers Gendry’s social origins from his body, clothes, and circumstances, and recognizes that physicians remain useful even where mages are unwanted. His loyalty to Gendry gives him both a cause and an opportunity to pursue research, while Tywin’s rejection leaves him eager to witness House Lannister’s downfall 3 5 15.
Although willing to torture prisoners and conduct lethal experiments, Qyburn is disturbed by Ramsay’s indiscriminate cruelty. He distinguishes his own experiments on condemned prisoners from Ramsay’s recreational abuse and murder, and regards the younger Bolton’s behavior as destructive madness 43 45.
Abilities & Skills
Medicine and Surgery
- Trained at the Citadel and forged a healer’s link 6.
- Built an anatomical model showing bones and internal organs, demonstrating detailed knowledge of human anatomy 3.
- Treats Gendry’s laceration with Myrish Fire Powder and tends wounded Wolf Pack mercenaries 5 9.
- Uses a sharp blade to treat Handsome Man’s bolt wound after its blood begins turning purplish black 12.
- Teaches Gendry to recognize poisons, including manticore venom 11.
Poisons and Experimental Necromancy
Qyburn seeks tireless undead guards whose performance would not be limited by fear or emotion 9.
- Combines Black Manticore venom with a clotting agent and dark magic, intending to prolong a subject’s agony before attempting transformation 11.
- Favors unusually large, powerful bodies; he identifies Meereenese gladiators, Dothraki khals, and the Mountain as promising subjects 9 15 45.
- Has no documented successful undead transformation in the supplied chapters 11 15 45.
| Subject / Research Stage | Chapter | Outcome / Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Khalas, the slain Meereenese gladiator | 9 | Qyburn wants to experiment on the corpse, but Gendry postpones it because such research could get them expelled from the Wolf Pack Company. |
| Bardak, a seven-foot Meereenese fighter | 11 | Gendry administers Qyburn’s treated venom with a spear. Bardak dies completely, and the transformation fails. |
| Captured Myrish assassin | 15 | An injected mixture of venom, coagulant, and dark magic kills the subject. Qyburn calls it his second experiment that month and blames the subjects’ poor physical resilience. |
| Research stalled | 45 | Qyburn lacks suitable specimens; a slain khal’s mangled body is unusable. Gendry again suggests the Mountain. |
Gendry privately attributes the failures to insufficient magical energy before the Red Comet’s arrival; Qyburn does not identify that explanation during the Bardak experiment 11 45.
Intelligence and Interrogation
- Oversees spies and reports on assassination attempts and Governor Joey’s mercenary recruitment 14 15.
- Maintains a growing network of orphans, children orphaned by war, and loyal freed slaves, particularly in the Disputed Lands, Lys, and Myr 42.
- Detects foreign agents investigating Wolf’s Den, City Hall, the arms factory, troop movements, and the Targaryen siblings 42.
- Is assigned to brief Rosso Brune before his covert mission in King’s Landing; later confirms that Littlefinger has received their gift 37 40.
- Directs Reek’s interrogation and delivers written confessions documenting Ramsay’s crimes. He uses threats against Ramsay to break Reek’s resistance, despite Gendry having forbidden him to harm Ramsay 43.
Scholarship and Magical Research
- Knows history, law, poetry, religion, and the language of Old Valyria, alongside medicine and poisons 5.
- Studies hereditary traits and theorizes that the Targaryen, Baratheon, Stark, and Martell bloodlines retain magical properties 3.
- Believes magic rises and falls like tides rather than disappearing entirely 5.
- Examines Daenerys’s fossilized dragon eggs and explains the relationship between an egg’s colors and those of its dragon. He believes living eggs are probably no longer available 26.
- Traces Baratheon strength to the Durrandons and theorizes that Gendry may reach a deeper level of power as the long summer ends 45.
- Expresses interest in studying a Stark and the miracles of warging, but Gendry orders him to restrain his curiosity 46.
Political Advice and Administration
- Predicts instability from Robert’s unequal treatment of Stannis and Renly, Renly’s ambitions, and House Tyrell’s exclusion from the royal inner circle 3.
- Advocates an alliance with Daenerys to draw on Targaryen loyalists and shared hostility toward House Lannister 8 9 10.
- Warns that expansion into the Stepstones requires attention to Dorne’s interests 13.
- Conducts censuses, inventories wealth, and surveys newly acquired estates 14.
- Assesses the manpower needed to hold Tyrosh and suppress resistance from exiled magisters 26.
- Explains how Robert and Eddard could mobilize support from six of the Seven Kingdoms, and helps the generals plan potential landings in Westeros 42.

- Handmade anatomical model: Used to explain anatomy, heredity, and his research 3.
- Books and an Essos map: Support Gendry’s education and their strategic discussions 3 5.
- Myrish Fire Powder: A painful disinfecting medicine; also used to incapacitate Goldtooth temporarily 4 5.
- Modified manticore venom: Prepared with a clotting agent and dark magic for his experiments 11 15.
